How do you use this  button in rpg maker 2003? it always comes out as a yen sign.

Control characters? What do you mean by that? Perhaps the V[0001]-esque functions you put in messages? Or the $A symbols? Or the ALT codes produced by pressing ALT+(4 digit number)?

Nevermind- it was an error with my computer- I was doing it right, It just didn't see it.

Alt codes make symbols like smiley faces and hearts and stuff.. if you look in the character map you can find a box with all of them..
