It was based off of the origional, but near the end of the series, X, Vile, Spark Mandrill, and Sigma make an appearance.

Edit: there has never been an anime of Megaman X... Unless you count the anime cutscenes in the games..

@Archem: Of course it isn't the new one... The new one isn't even worth being called crap.

Hmm... That's odd... He WAS Dr. Bright in one of the MegaMan games I played... Mebe a typo? Or multiple releases with a different translation? Because I KNOW it was Dr. Bright...

The only good English adaptations of animes I've seen are Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop. American companies feel the need to water down animes. Hypocritical bastards. The name of the company is DIC! DIC! How can you be an advocate for kiddy shows?

 Dr. Bright  was from Sim City for SNES, he'd give you advices. When they were releasing MM2, there was an error and they changed Light's name by Bright, and in Sim City the bright became light.
