How does a team work?

"OMG, Almeidabooīs so stupid...". I know someone thought that upon reading the threads title. And I know ppl think that regardless LOL. But hereīs the point...
Iīm starting a new game, and I didnīt want to do it alone cuz it sucks and itīs too hard. So I was planning on making a team for it...but I got no clues on how a RPG Maker team works...I mean, howīll ppl know what I did, what to do, have the game updated so that the can make their work...COMUNICATION is the answer! Dammit, thatīs not what I mean! What about the things every person do. For example: I do a certain map here at home and my friend do another in his home...thatīll be messy...
So, if anyone with experince in this can giive me some guidelines...Iīd be very thankfull!

The thing is, RPG Maker teams rarely work out. Many people here tend to try joining a team but don't have much real experience in the thing they say they can do. Stuff like that.

Good point.

But the easiest way to maintain a team would be to make a private message board with Proboards or InvisionFree.

Yeah, we have people who believe the mini teams board is a great place for their game teams to be formed. This is incorrect, that board was created for teams that help others, not just themselves. Game team threads there are more like recruitment things, or advertisements, not a mini team, so yeah, it's best to make a small free private board for it.

Hmm...got it. I described an extreme situation cuz the team in question would be formed by me and some friends that are nearly my neighbours...but advices are always welcome when your adventuring yourself into something you simply donīt know...
Do you think that assigning posts would make things easier? Like oneīs responsible for music, other for visual resources, other for coding (this oneīs gonna work more...)...?

It's not a dumb question. Many people try to create teams but run into problems early on that tear it apart. After all, only one person can be working on the maker at a time.

Your best bet after setting up a forum or something is to assign roles. One person writes scripts, one person designs graphics, one does midis, one person does the maker programming, and so on. Communication is IMPORTANT. Even the best midi is useless if it doesn't fit into the game.

Thanks for the wise words Sai...Iīve been thinkig that, even with all the help iīm gonna get, it wonīt be enough to make the game really good...I canīt count on Charas for this, cuz Charas doesnīt support *that RPGMaker*...and I think itīs a LOT of talent wasted cuz I imagine what the Charas experts could do with better resolution, colour depht and so on... But thanks a lot for the help!

I'm running a game team, with some other talented folks. I use a site and a forum, it works great. Also I have all of their e-mail addresses.

LOL, you saved me 2 problems...the second oneīs that Iīve been trying to do my own RPG Maker characters, but they looked so ridiculous, so fvcked up...cuz when I zoom into the pic t seems like the colours have been randomly put...And I thought it would work form me...Then, when I browsed through you site I saw that tuto for spriting...that kinda gave a some light LOL. But I need more still...cuz right now iīm dealing with RPGMXP and the character look so much better...and so much harder to do (even though the resolution helps)

I don't mean to discourage you here, but I wouldn't go with a team. Personally I don't like the idea of teams, its a cool idea to get a bunch of people to work on a game together, but usually all I see in a team is the producer (or head of the team) looking for an easy and fast way to make a game. All in all, they just want other people to make their game for them. This is not true in all cases, but most of the teams I've seen worked like that.

In the end the producer excpects everyone else to do the work, and they rarely do anything themselves. Even if they do a lot of work themselves, it will take a lot longer to make the game, because you'll always have to be waiting for other people to make stuff for you. And unlike in comercial games where the workers get paid, the people working on the team usually have other stuff to do, and have a hard time finding time to work on your stuff.

What I have written was dirrectly from what I experianced first hand from two differant teams. A friend of mine who is the lead of a team has been working on a game for twice as long as I have been working on my game. Yet, I have twice as much gameplay as him, and I hardly spend any time working on my game. Above all that, the over all quality of his game, is no better than the quality of my game. I'm not judging the storylines or anything like that, but the overall quality of the game.

So, my advice is if you want to form a team, don't form it around a specific game. Instead get a few people who are good with graphics, a few people who are good at music, a few people who are good at programing, and a few people for other stuff such as mapping and such. Then you can all make your own games, and if you really need some help, you can ask one of them to make something for you, and then if someone else needs help, they can ask you for it. I am part of one of these types of teams, and it seems to work very well. I make graphics for various games, then various people help me with my game with stuff such as scripting.

This way you are all working together, instead of working for one person. Trust me, the process is faster, but instead of your team making just one quality game, your making 4 or 5.

Other than that though, I suggest that you try to do most of the stuff on your own. If you don't think you can do it, at least give it a try, its the only way you'll get better. If there's something you really need help with, then feel free to ask someone then.
