Your game
« Reply #15 on: May 08, 2006, 08:48:03 AM »
This is the kind of shiaat im talking about. WHO CARES if the maps are blocky? are people seriously going to say that oldschool rpgs with blocky maps SUCKED? Cmon... FF2 for SNES had blocky maps! FF1 for NES had blocky as **** maps. IF the maker of the game doesnt focus on thier maps as much, it probably means that they are focusing on other areas... which will make the game better in some aspects. Ive played some games with AMAZING maps, amazing art... and even amazing programming. but the game's dialogue and plot were SO BAD that i felt my brain leaking out my ear when I was playing them.

Hey, if you are happy with the overall appearance and playability of your game... then continue making it as it is. ALOT of this world is closed minded, and they see something like a blocky map (or a gay person) they are like... HA! THATS GAY.

**** them
they are retarded.
they wouldnt playtest your game cuz they are closed minded. even if they do play it all they focus on are the unimportant factors. whatever.

haha im drunk :P

Thanks for the random fact Bluhman. That is interesting to know!

Sephetious, Thank you for you comment and opinion on my maps. I take it to my heart. But I still want to get better in them. Don't worry about whole great graphic / lame storyline thing. Trust me I know exactly what your talking about ((Final Fantasy: Spirit within. TT-TT How could they do that to FF!?)). Anyways, the story is reaching it's perfecting peak. ^-^ I work on it everyday during English (Stupid World Literature! DOWN WITH ENGLISH!!).

Update:

Fixed up an old map and made a new one.

Went shopping for a cheap Paint shop pro 7 or up. It was impossible. I'll try again this weekend.

Graphics (in terms of character poses, battle characters, recoloring/ repairing chipsets, and ect..) is on hold until I can find the graphic program that I want.

Half of the script is written out. I'm going to give it to my friend to go over it and tell me what she thinks.

Oh.... I will probably make a demo but it will have nothing to do with the story line. It will just show you a part of the world, battles, and some of the planned mini-games.

hehe sorry :P I didnt mean it like 'Yeah, I drink alcohol, I'm cool.'

I really was drunk though, so I dont really know why I said it... but probably because the alcohol was causing some sort of psuedo-insecurity.

and Pika, youre welcome. Now that I am sober, I can say that your game seems pretty interesting so far. All the different characters/classes and such is pretty sweet. some are pretty original. nice :P
I was just releasing my rage on your page because people kept telling me my game could never be good because I used the generic RTP chipsets for some of it...

yeah your maps were a bit blocky.. but I can see that you have good map building potential (from the tower map). It looks like you used the same chipset for your forest that I did in my game. (that people were accusing me of copying from another game)
I can see why its blocky, when I first started messing around with that chipset it took me a few to actually figure out how to work with it.

If you really want to upgrade the look of your maps then I would recommend starting a map with a chipset you want to use, and play with it. dont even build the map right away, just play with it for a while until you get a feel for how it works. once you get it down you can make it look better, and after a while youll get fast @ it.

At first with my forest zone, it was taking a really long time to build it. then I started to get good at it and i devised ways to make the leafy canopies faster. like, i would first draw with the pure black tile an outline for how big that leaf area was going to be, then filled it in. then I took all the upper left leaf tiles and put them on the tiles closest to the left and top of the black tiles. then i put all the upper left leaf 'connector' tiles in between. did the same for lower left lower right and upper right, then filled the rest in with the straight (up/down/left/right) tiles. then I added the trunks afterward.

sorry that was hard to explain, i hope you caught what i meant :P good luck!

Thanks Seph for the advice. I can use everything I can get. ^-^ Oh and thanks for the comment of originalty. I was afraid that people would think that the game was not original. ^-^

Update:

I experimented with the shift button and making cliffs on my tower map and this is that I got. (Tell me whet you think of it.)

Edit: Does any one have a waterfall splash? I could really use one.

It looks pretty good. :) One thing I do notice though is that the ledges look a bit square. Maybe try making them more curvy to go for a more realistic effect. Other than that that, it looks okay. I like the whole symmetry thing you got going on there. Makes it look fancy. :)

And here's some waterfall splashes. I should mention I took them from DB's old game demo. I don't know where he got them.

the tower map looks twice as cool :P like i said, you do have great potential.

if i may offer a little constructive criticism...

the cliffs look neat, but they are unrealistic looking because they overlap eachother. you should almost consider making the cliff edges run all the way down to the ground instead of just going 3 or 4 tiles to the bottom of the cliff ledge. another thing is i dont know if you meant to do this, but your angel statue things arent even on both sides of the screen. one is 1 tile higher than the other. it doesnt look bad @ all though.

nice work

also
hard to explain what i mean by this, but notice how the height of the land magically changes when the cliff edge hits the statue. i know that is hard to fix, but if you make the cliff come out and have just grass on the furthest edges off the map instead of cliff edges it will look better.

Coaster - Thanks for the characterset and the constructive criticism. It helps me a lot!

Seph - Thank you for the tips and for telling me about the statues. I did not notice it.

Everyone. Be free to tell me what you like and hate about this game. I like to know what people hate about my game. It makes me think of ways to improve my game.

Update:
Still working on the script. My friend read a page and liked it.

Update:

The game is done! ........... Just kidding.

No much happening. I'm still trying to find a PSP 7 or up but there is not much success. So graphic are done, except the facesets to some characters.

I have been working on my script still. I think my english teacher is catching on to me though. Oh well, he has not said anything about it so I'm okay.

Well that's about it for right now.

That is just one square mountain up there. I'll show you how that would look from distance. *attachment*

...That's not how mountains do look like. :P
Try un-square it a little bit.
