EDIT:
finally finished!

how would you suggest spiffing this up a bit?
perhaps adding a transparent picture behind it, or something decorative to make the HUD look a bit better?

What do you suggest?

When you add things like Weapon Showing HUD- Equipted items, status (like, poisoned, ect) and other things, it'll spiff up on it's own, believe me.

I've been busy working on my DBS (It's messed up so much, I could easily convert it into a CBS) and my CMS.

Tell you what. Since 3 out of 4 of my beta testers went awol, when I'm finished, do you want to beta test?

Respond by PM so this topic doesn't get cluttered.

Can you put them both on a regular sized window?

Yeah, they look pretty good.  If we can see the whole screen it might help a little.

You should make the screenshot smaller.

How come you didn't put the bottom of the hills in? You do know that you can use events for a third image layer, right?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense!

An attempt at an actual screenshot. This map will be in the game. I didn't add the people and the dialogue yet.

Which background looks better?

Number 1
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i316/aboutasoandthis/Altar1.png

Number 2
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i316/aboutasoandthis/Altar2.png

Number 2 makes more sense proportion wise, but with Number 1 I can add a better lightning flash than just flashing the background. They're a little hard to see, but there are lighting effects in there. Those white dots are moths. They look better in-game.

dragon_food: Not bad. I'm not a fan of Mac & Blue (REFMAP) so...I don't have much to comment on.

Mixed.

It's a heavy, *** recolor mixup of 7th Saga, Rudra's Treasure, and SD3 I made. If it reminds you of Ico :D. I based it off that Grave Spirit game, and  that guy's game is based off Ico. Maybe that's where I got it from.

That's not SD3, it's secert of evermore. I have the same chipset.

Night background looks good. It's to dark to notice the difference between the pillars and the background. I'm sure you want it to be night, but you should use a brighter night-time background... one with a bright moon or something.

If you do use one, use 2.

Also, MY GOD! How many freaking chipset mixs are you going to do? Your maps and chipsets look good, but how the hell to you think that having SoM, ToP, Rudra, FF6, as you say; 'recolored Mac', Theodore, SD3, Bahamut's Lagoon, and SoE, will look and fade well together? I even stop to think at times that mine don't look well together, because I mix Rudra with SD3 at times, but you've seriously got some issues there. The chipsets themselves might look fantastic, but the transistion from map to map it probally going to suck because of the huge difference in each tileset's origin.

I'm not saying this to be mean... I'm just trying to help you understand that consistancy in a game is important, especially in it's graphics.

To answer your question...I guess...
« Reply #644 on: September 10, 2006, 02:02:04 AM »
What you say...is really confusing me.

It's a storm. No rain. Just a thunderstorm.

I try to use color, grass, and water to stay consistent. The main grass and the water come from Theodore.

I try to flow from one color to the next. You begin the game looking at that chipset's color, the lightning color is important. You see that same lightning color in the next scene. Then you see the Bahamut Lagoon Graphics. Then the Bahamut Lagoon stuff is put into the next scene...

I take one little color from the last scene, and put it in the next to transition it. You'd have to see it in-game.

Actually I did use SD3. Maybe not that much in the screenshot, but it's there. One of the chipsets I'm using.

You'll have to see it in-game.  :| Of course I'm trying to stay consistant. I just do it through "color" and not through what game the sprites came from.

Ever heard of "Seeker of the Sun?" That game had some nice consistancy. They used color to keep things consistant. They mixed Star Ocean, Chrono Trigger, and some FF6 just by color alone. Go to gaminggroundzero.com and try it out. I take a lot of inspiration from that game.

Just so you know, I haven't had the time to map my game out. I've been too busy coding. I only do a map for fun-ish when I have a specific cutscene I want to do. I haven't done the dungeons, the towns, blah blah blah.

I don't go in order. I just code, get bored, look through my storyline for a cutscene I can do, make the chipset, map it, make cutscene, go back to coding.

Damn, what a long post.

EDIT:
A lot of your game isn't very consistent...
