I'm shocked
« on: March 16, 2007, 04:13:03 PM »
that there was no topic on the "Omg, we found jesus' body!!" story. I didn't look into it really since I don't believe it but is anyone interested? Let's talk about it.

Yep. Either that one or another site I looked at said something about how they discovered the cave 30 years ago, and have had the coffins for abou 10 years. But they didn't decode the names until now, and the bodies are jesus', his moms, his brother, that other mary, and his son.

Yeah in my art history class thing we were talkin about how christianity is alive today because of this roman dude who found interest in this small group's beliefs. Some of the stories, drawings, statues, and so on were recycled from other religons or myths from what back.

I got into a heated debate about this last night.

I myself am an open minded agnostic.
My roomates are devout Christians and Catholics.
I bite my tounge alot.
So anyways, we were watching the documentary on this, and one of the roomates pointed out
"If this is true it completly debunks christianity. The entire basis of the religion is fraudulent."

And I got to thinking about this...
Why is is that so many "Devouts" cant take things the bible says as metaphore. The bible was written by people not far from Cave-men, as far as societal evolution is concerned. They ate mandrake roots. And then it was Re-written by hand by, in many cases, hermit like over zealous monks. It was re-written several ways to suit the states needs, which at that point was not seperated from church.

Anyhow, a long story short, I told this roomate of mine, after she stated that she would have to find new religion if this info proved true, "It dosent disprove your bible. It Dosent make it a lie, it just means you have to interpret it differently. Its now become a proven metaphore."

And then she freaked. The house was tense. I was accused of "Attacking" the faith.

Pfft.

Personally, I would be more inclined to heed the words of Jesus if It was PROVEN that he was a real Man, and not some magical son of god. I hope that this finding is true, and I hope people of the far christian right have to re-asses their religious values into something a bit more realistic and practical. By no means would I wish upon them to stop believeing in their "Christ". If anything I hope the whole christian experience becomes a bit more tangible for them.

This is not earth shattering, or even suprising to me though

I see people like the Devout room mate of yours to not be so devout at all. If her faith is that shakeable that at the possibility of someone finding Jesus's family's bodies that she has to consider a new religion, than her faith is clearly not that strong. True faith means you don't question it, you don't need science to prove you right or someone else wrong, you believe what you do because in your heart you believe it to be true. You didn't attack her faith, she's just an idiot.

Anyway, this isn't the first time someone's found Jesus's tomb, and it prolly won't be the last time.

If you think about it, 1000 years from now someone could find records from the Heaven's gate Cult and believe they found the truth about Jesus and his suicide cult. (leader of that cult believed he was jesus). History is way to uncertain to ever gain the whole truth from it.

Do remember, that as much as people like to say that the bible has been edited to fit the needs, the same can be said about History, every document, theory, and law can be changed by people to fit the need.

She suggests that perhaps Christianity is a fraud, and you say that the Bible can just be interpretted metaphorically, and you're attacking her religion?

Psh.

But yeah, the Bible has had countless 'corrections' made, mostly to suit what was happening at the time.  Sure, I can see a devout Christian proclaiming the original Bible as the word of God, but after these many edits and translations?

Again, psh.

I've heard of the story but I can't say I believe big claims. To support conclusions of that magnitude requires more proof than they are presenting, at least to me. I applaud the effort though and think trying to reach back into the dusty past to find the truth is a worthy goal, even if it's an unpleasent truth.

Yeah, I heard it. I don't think it's Jesus' body. I believe in God. I'm a catholic. If it is Jesus' body, that's chill.

By the way gemini, it's fundamentalist cristians that take it literal. Catholics and cristians do take a large portion of it as metaphor.

Jesus was not necessarily Hitler, but he obviously played a part in Hitler's Aryan ideals.

Once again I must pull out my motto.  What.  The.  Freak?  Why would someone think they were Jesus?  Also, you have a very good point with that.

I believe jesus lived, but he was only a man. A good man, that gave the world ethics and ideals to base morals around and teach with, but he was a man none the less.
