Macs vs PCs

The topic bubbled up in my Web Design class, so I thought I'd bring it here. I'll keep track of reasons for each side. (Though I prefer PCs myself.)

There is no more argument about Mac VS PC, because Mac runs on Intel now. The argument is Mac vs Windows vs Linux.

Anywho, I prefer Windows because most everything is either programmed for Windows or has a Windows version. It's very user friendly and will find drivers for almost everything you plug in. Vista does nifty stuff like prefetching files that I access often and storing them in unused memory to speed up loading times, or suggesting compatibility modes when a program fails.

I'm using Windows, but Mac is cool. Windows is like, buy this, buy this, buy this, buy this, buy this, this looks pretty, buy this...

With Mac you get it all in one shot. If you're not into computers, this is what you should get. The problem is that there is hardly anything good for Mac as far as games go.

I agree with the points Osmose raised. I prefer Windows overall, although my Mac usage has been pretty limited. Maybe I'm biased.

I don't understand how "80% of all programs are made for Windows" is so hard for you to comprehend. I'd insult you but I know you aren't that stupid.

As for your other point, WHAT? Windows has a huge variety of freeware alternatives to things like Office (OpenOffice), Photoshop(Ultimate Paint, GIMP, etc.), and any other program that might charge you. Mac probably has some too, although probably not as much of a variety.

Windows. It's got the most products for it, RM2k Runs on it, and the availability of things for it is just greater.

Mac is okay, I suppose. Some of my friends use macs instead of PC's, and they honestly have very similar capabilities. Thing is, I've not yet seen a badass gaming computer that runs a mac OS.

Linus is just beyond me. I'm not savvy enough to use it.

My impression of Macs is that they are aimed towards people who don't really understand (or want to understand) computers.  You get all the things the casual user would want, and there you go!

Windows, though I have a bias towards it based on being raised on it, wins the match for me.  I use a Mac in my Media Arts class at school, and they are interesting.  If they spent less time on crazy graphics (which I will admit can amuse me for way too long...) like pulsing OK buttons and rippling effects, maybe I would like it.

Macs seem too "rounded" to me, while Windows has the "square"-ness that I prefer.  I don't get it, but the metaphor makes sense to me...

I have experience from my TAFE course.

PCs: Crashed 3 times near the beginning of the year.
Macs: Crashed AT LEAST 26 times so far, with more to come.

Macs ****ing suck. Seriously. Some of the reasons they might crash? You're saving your file. You're about to save your file. You have realised that you haven't saved your file recently. Having two programs open? CAN'T COMPUTE, mother****er.
Seriously, you hear a lot of jokes about Macs crashing, and honest to God THEY ARE ALL TRUE.

Meanwhile, at least PCs have games. Macs don't even have minesweeper.
Mine. ****ing. Sweeper. Where is my minesweeper? I want to play minesweeper!

Then of course there's the thing I don't have to worry about yet, upgrading. You upgrade your PC by buying new parts. You upgrade your Mac by buying a new Mac.

Razor, my mac has crashed like twice.

Anyways, both. I like Macs for photoshop and PCs for other stuff.

Actually, maybe that's why I'm not too fond of Macs. They've always crashed on me at the most inconvenient times. I LOVED it when I moved to New York and began using PC's. Then I didn't have to worry about.. Losing an essay or anything dumb like that.

GO WINDOWS!!! I love windows... I tried to mess with mac but the way it looked annoyed me... greatly. The toolbars is horrid and at the first couple of glances it's hard to tell what's what.

I'm a Windows guy. I've used Macs before, and although they're very beginner-friendly and seem streamlined for doing tasks, they don't offer enough, well, options in the ways of outward compatibility with programs that I always use. Well, not as much as with Windows, anyways. I've also acquired a much higher level of proficiency with PCs due to the fact that they're much more common, much more varied when looking into a purchase, and there are many more easily and readily available opportunities to be had with software on the PC side. Macs are cool and all, but the OS just doesn't cut the mustard, if you catch my meaning.

Neither one crashes more or less often than the other, unless you're just unlucky or doing something that you ought not be meddling with. Crashing, in my experience, comes as a result of the program you're running and its compatibility with the hardware and software you're trying to run it with, and not the OS.

Also, Mac hardware pisses me off, and their advertising makes them come off as pompous dick-heads.

As for Linux, I have zero experience with it, but I'm starting to get a little fed-up with Microsoft lately, so I have every intention to start learning to use this OS.

So until I learn the workings of Linux and decide if it's worth me using, my preference lies with Windows. Not Vista, though. Still waiting until they smooth out the bumps in its frame.

That part was a joke. :P Do you still wuv me?  :sweet:

But to get serious, If you just want a computer and aren't serious about learning computers, you'd want a Mac. I'm speaking on it as if it were a video game console with a keyboard, instead of a computer.

Let's say I was a parent. I use my home computer for work, but I want to buy a game for my child. I want the comfort of knowing that the game will not lag, but run as smoothly as a video game console.

Like you have said before.

I was agreeing with you. Because the amount of programs out there for Mac are limited, if you see a really nice game for Mac, chances are the the game was specifically designed for Mac. You would not need to worry if your system is up to snuff enough to play it.

However, if you see a really nice game for Windows you would have to ask yourself:
-Do I have enough memory on my computer to install this game?
-Do I have enough RAM on my computer to run this without any problems?
-If my child wants to use another program while playing this game, do I have enough RAM to handle that as well?
-Is my graphics card up to snuff?
-Do I have enough prossessing power?

These are the minimum you need in order for the game to be played. If you are not that serious about having a computer, upgrading it, and purchasing new software as the years go buy, the Mac is a better option. If you are interested in learning computers, upgrading your system, and spending time towards better games, then get Windows. Whenever I talk about electronics, I always use a parental perspective.

The only thing I don't like about Macs is that they're...corny for a computer.

I am completely agreeing with this statement. I know what you mean about the round thing too.
