Well, actually, I meant that it was ruined by the second frame. The moment 50's book made a cameo was the moment that things got hilarious. You'd be better picking a respectable book, having one character tell a lengthy description about why it's a good book, and have me end the fourth panel with the classic "I agree".

I wanted to include some guy walking his dog in frame 3 to explain how it got there, but... that would've required too much work.

That is actually sorta funny. He's talking about how easy it is to make grilled cheese, then burns it. He fails to pay attention because he is talking to the reader. Archem, that is comedy. Though not alot, but gets a chuckle. o.o
