You gotta suck a lot not to admit that FF 7 rules. SEriously, the storyline is perfect, the graphics were awesome, the battle system also. Music ruled. Characters were well defined and funny (specially the Turks). The character design was awesome too.

Stop trying to be the "Oh, I'm so anti-fashion-games! I'm the cult gamer type, huhuhu...".

I think he was talking to Dragonium dude.

In a lot of ways FFVIII was a great game. The art direction and graphics were beautiful, I admit. The battle system was pretty fun. It even had some great characterization. The game just didn't need voice acting because it was written so damn well. There were just so many things wrong with it...

Which reminds me. NO ONE has mentioned Pokemon. C'MON!

Well, I slightly agree with this. Pokemon had the potential to be a great game, but so far, the only thing they've released since Pokemon Blue were updates for new Pokemon. Nothing too phenominal was added in the other colors or precious stones (Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire.)

I mean, the basis of the game: Get Pokemon, get badges, get to final four trainers, game beaten.

They tried to revamp the series with other types of games, which I won't even get into. Most suck. Terribly.

I understand that they added the Boy/Girl thing and updated the graphics, but come on, how long has the game been out?

But I guess if people still enjoy it, they must have gotten something right.

I was actually talking about the series as a whole. You have to admit it, when Pokemon came out it pretty much changed the way people played videogames. It was still had deep roots in being an RPG, yet it managed to reach a huge audience and even more so than a Final Fantasy game. Especially if you were in grade school when it came out, EVERYONE was playing it. Not many RPGs can do that. The only one I can think of that did was FF7.

I don't like FF7. Yeah, I can understand why it was a pioneer blah, blah blah Nobuo Uematsu, etc etc, but I don't think it was the best RPG by far. I'd say either Skies of Arcadia or Phantasy Star II. SoA had that beautiful world with the incredible airship system, and Phantasy Star, while a bit rough, was just amazing in terms of how the game could turn out.

Not just about Drag, but about anyone that fails to acknoledge that FF7 was great just for the sake of doing it.

And FF8 WAS a great game, and the junction system also, as much as the materia system was awesome.

I found FF8's storyline quite confusing though.

Best Music: FFVII/FFIX
Best Atmosphere: FFIX/FFX

I'm far from a FFVIII nazi and there were some amazing moments, I loved the graphical style, the music was really good but... Man I hated the fact that in battle, if you hit 'GF' every turn you won pretty much every battle until the final one. Magic was for people who got sick of seeing the GF animations over and over again and I found myself not trying my 'best ' because my best was pretty boring.

My personal pick is the trilogy of Baldur's Gate.

On console, I'd have to say Seiken Densetsu III or Final Fantasy VI. Close third is Chrono Trigger. SNES rpgs ruled.

I'm not hatin' on FF7 because I think it's cool to do so. I'm hatin' on FF7 because I hated all of it and because it's more overrated than Linkin Park.

I will concede that if you don't figure out the Junction system early on it becomes a case of "Summon GFs, win battles". However if you get the hang of it, learn to organise your magic, use Abilities wisely, and Junction to stats, it's a lot easier to battle effectively.

Sure, using GFs is reasonably damaging, but when you have Zell hitting 9999 with every physical you feel truly mighty. Mighty beyond words.

Of course you shouldn't have to spend all your time organising things just to do damage. Maybe the Junction system was a bit overdone. Maybe.

The one thing I didn't like about the Junction system compared to the Materia system was the lack of Combos. In FF7, you could set off a chain reaction where you used Knights of the Round over and over, without any repercussions if you worked hard enough to do so. FF8's strategy felt a little limited compared to this.

*Walks out on a limb to talk about something other than Final Fantasy*

EarthBound

It's hard to say about Earthbound, except that it's an oddly good game, and I do mean oddly... this game is fairly strange... unlike a lot of rpgs, it's based in modern day... you get unusual battle events (like for example, if you don't call your mother or visit home that often, your character may choose to not fight because he's homesick!)

As well as various other strange features, like a town where everything is backwards, enemies such as the famous melting clock, and even the 'new age retro hippie'!

Otherwise, this game has features not seen in other rpgs, like the ability to opt out of battles that are below you, and to resist kills by escaping or beating the battle before your life depletes completely... in essence you could be struck with several blows that would each take more than your life span, but if the enemy has one hit left and you finish him off, you'll be fine.

Other than that, this game has one of the wierdest storylines I've ever played.

I never use GF's or Magic, I just junction like hell, Squall + Trigger + good magic junctioned = higher damage than a GF instantly.

Best RPG of all time? Baldur's Gate 2. However, since this has already been said, my second pick would definitely be Oblivion. Sorry, but I'm not a giant fan of JRPGs and games where character customization is nonexistent.
