No, you need to use an event since the maker doesn't have a jumping in it.

You can find some tutorials around here.

OK, now, by event, do you mean Map Event?
The only other way is Common Event, which is found in the Database (F8). Record the Hero's position in Coordinates.
Now, make it so that it records the Hero's movement (use non-trigger Parallel Process) in Variables (link with Key Input Processing/Password). Record again in different variable. Make a Conditional Branch/Fork that sees if the position now is different from the original one, with a Custom Handler/Else Handler. In the Else, make it use Key Input Processing/Password again, in a third variable. Make a Conditional Branch/Fork to see if you put Decision Key/Enter or whatever key other than Esc/Cancel and the movement keys. If so, make a move event where the Hero begins a jump, then moves in a direction after activating phasing, however many tiles a standard cliff or ledge or whatever in your game is, then ends jump and turns phasing off. (decided by a branch based on what values the variables are) You can also make it Key Input and see if you're pressing in the same direction, than doing it, Zelda-style.

you pretty much need an event to do anything/

Sorry, but it seems like youll actually have to LEARN to use RPG maker.

Search for some tuts....but RPGmaker isnt ideal for platformers. Try game maker or stencyl (if its released yet)
