Not to be a stupid arse here but I bet you that barely any of the people here knows who's leading Sweden, what our currency is, who our greatest model is or where it is located without looking it up on wikipedia or googlesearch.

"I know a lot, but I can't remember everything and so we fall into oblivion."

But well, yeah. We learn a lot more about the outside than the outside learns about us.

Slavery, cold war, Westward expansion, immigration, prohibition, Texas. There's actually a lot.

There's an ass load of history here! You only mentioned the war-related history and the early years. We have had over two hundred years of confusion and self-loathing. What makes for a more interesting history than that?

Serious question time: Do you guys like zoolapalooba?

Actually most US schools don't teach about more recent stuff like Vietnam, Korea, Iraq.... sometimes not even past WWII.
As for teaching about other countries, I might go to colleg in Britain and I know NOTHING. It's depressing.

Britain has a rich and varied history. Basically all you need to know is that we're being run by Gordon Brown, the least charismatic man alive, our currency is the pound, or "quid" if you're an authentic Brit, our main language is raucous swearing, and we're better than every other country.

First of all, why the hell should we even need to know anything about a country asides from in which continent it lies whose significance in history doesn't even surpass that of the Netherlands, which significance isn't really that great either?

Second, like I said, do people even know a thing about the Netherlands, like how it was one of the forces behind colonizing the new world, starting with New York (Brooklyn's name being derived from the Dutch Breukelen, also a place in the Netherlands), and then expanding to the Republic of Suriname (although you could actually call it a trade between England and the Netherlands, where the Netherlands traded New York in for Suriname and ten bucks)? Or how they practically used Indonesian people as slaves, despite slavery being banished at that time? Or how the Netherlands was one of the first countries to be liberated by the Alliance during World War II, despite the fact that more than half of the Dutch people were NSB'ers (people who aligned with the Nazis), or that the Netherlands were found a safe haven for the Jews because of its neutrality in World War I? That Philips is a Dutch product, and that basically the Dutch people raped both Mario and Luigi for the CD-I?

I know a lot of nonsense that doesn't even have real significance about the Netherlands. But the Netherlands does have a significance in shaping the world.

I know you do a lot of drugs!!

I actually know a lot about Netherlands geography. Plus, if you misread, people won't even know the CONTINENT we are located!

One of the reasons I posted this is because I think this mediocre notion the countries teach their people about the whole outside world is one of the big time causes the rule today is, in one word, selfishness. People that think that knowing your own bellybutton, as you seem to think, is enough for you to go through the whole existance iter: born - grow - **** - die, which really won't make things any better. Sorry for the sincerity.

I did study world's history and geography in school. I did leave these subjects a long time ago, so my knowledge is diminished, but still we take our time to learn from history a bit.

And, it is the educational system current behavior that leads people to say, in a clear demonstration of ignorance and prejudice, that the Netherlands are only about doing drugs, which is a lie.

So yeah, there ya go.  :Plight:
