My electronic music experiments
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:00:17 PM »
...Been feeling creative lately. Still getting better at this, but these are like the first two of my experiments that I'm even remotely satisfied with. So why not ask others for their opinion?

http://www.2shared.com/file/3268209/67643534/mittpunkt_v3.html
Mittpunkt, a more conventional song. Kinda ambient. Sorta offkey. Gotta replace that cymbal at the end, it sounds like crap.

http://www.2shared.com/file/3339500/a0f7a0a5/Signs_of_Doom_and_Demise.html
Sings of Doom and Demise... Very dark and noisy. A bit short. I intend to release all my future works under the name "Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia" because it's harder to remember than cherko.

Give me your honest opinion. It's either sorta good, or the people I've shown it to have all been sycophants. Which is kinda likely, since I've only shown this to <7 friends.

I'm not the only one to mess with Fruity Loops! Yay!!

I can hear that you have a better mastery of the program, but you could use some work musically.

First one: Reminded me of a level on a Genesis game. It didn't really go anywhere emotionally. I think you could use a dirtier sounding drum kit, and a few more powerful chords. It sounded very empty.

I LOVED the triangles in this song, especially that first one. If you could keep that feel through the entire song that would make me very happy.

Second one: I love how the song opened. Great atmosphere. It didn't sound like it went anywhere though. It was also very loud. I played it through my headphones and the bass really messed with my speakers.

I think they both have great potential, but I think you should listen to some more music to get some ideas. For you I recommend Massive Attack. I think they have that Trip-hop feel I felt you were going for.

Mittpunkt... the drums are awesome, but the song doesn't seem to go anywhere. Kinda makes me feel like I'm playing a french gamemaker game. And I'm not sure about the cymbal, I think it sounds okay.

Signs of doom and demise is, I'm slightly ashamed to say, the sort of music I like XD So that one's awesome. Could do with some more length and a bit more variety, probably an audiable instrument like a bass coming in and then... Hang on, can I have a go at adding some bits to one of your songs?

^ I don't see why not. Mess with my songs as much as you want.

Thanks for the positive response, and the recommendation. Trip-hop interests me, and I certainly need to listen to more of that kind of music. Signs of Doom and Demise is more like the kind of music I listen to myself, but I'm aiming for some grey space in between.

So you're going for an acoustic feel instead of a hip-hop one? Aww... <runs into corner>

Even so, you should both listen to Massive Attack's Mezzanine, especially Angel.

It definately has that clear rock sound. Plus more people on this site should listen to my music. :P

I'm pretty sure those drums come with the program. That's why they sound so clear.

Yes, those drums come with the program. I haven't been able to find better sounds. On one of my other experiments I use homemade drums recorded on a really crappy mic (and by homemade, I mean like, slamming on an empty coke can)
It actually fits, and it sounds original. I will probably be using these drum sounds on future projects.

And someone actually voted that I should dispose off myself  :x  That's mean T_T

If it helps, I'm pretty sure you can type in "drum.kit" in Google to find some more drums. The free ones don't have the crystal clear quality though.

For my stuff I like to cut up my own drums from old songs. It keeps it very dirty sounding. Turns out a lot of popular acts do it. (Kanye, Justice, Dr. Dre) Again, this is if you want that kind of sound.

The first one was cool. I just wish it had more of a melody. The second one was... strange and interesting. I don't know, it's not really my style, but it's cool for the type of thing that it is. Kinda sounds like a futuristic ruin or spacecraft or something... like Metroid Prime (that's a compliment I liked Metroid Prime's ambiance :p).

On second thoughts, I've tried and can't do it justice, dude. I wanted to follow the main melody with a bass or guitar but you never kept the same rhythm so it became damn near impossible :p

A short interlude (1:12). My most experimental composition so far.

You need to put these things into an album to justify them. You'd probably have to have a few more conventional songs to tie it together, though.

I'll put up a webpage or a myspace or some stuff later. But you didn't tell me how you liked the song.

Also, been working on an extended version of Signs of Doom and Demise.'

And I'll promise to add more cowbell.

New song. I wanted to try using samples. I think it turned out rather well.

That's pretty cool. A bit repetitive, but a nice beat, and I like how the voices kinda blend in... well, for the most part anyway, until it gets really loud. But then once it gets insanely loud it stops so that's nice.

What do you use to make these?

Oh, Fruity Loops, never mind sorry.
