When you import the battlechar(any resource for that matter) by clicking on it from the folder it is stored, there will be a new window poppin up as a preview.
During this preview you can zoom in on the picture and such. Now, if you notice any colour flashing, that's the transparent colour that the game decided to make (Usually black). There can only be one transparent colour btw.
Now, simply click on the colour that's in the background 'till it starts to flash instead of the previous colour. This will make the background colour be transparent instead.
When that is done, just click okay and have a new test battle to see if it works.

BTW: You might have to go into the database and choose the newly imported battlechar over the old one if you're unlucky.
btw: Having the picture saved as JPEG will officially screw the picture.

I hope this is what you wanted help with.

You're so nice to people. You deserve and award.
EDIT - Since seriousness is hard to tell on the internet, I'll let you know now that I'm being honest.

I'm sorry, but could you try to explain that better?
Are you trying to get rid of his shadow?
Is the shadow and the background the same colour?
Did you click on the colour of the background and not the colour of the shadow?

Are you making sure that your picture is 8-bit?
