I'm having a problem with magic

Basically, whenever I use magic it either misses or hits but no damage
Not even a 0 appears, either a miss or nothing
What's going on?

Did you forget to set the effect rating?

No matter what I set it as, it won't do damage or even show a number
If I fix this then I can get on with my game

well, let's see... Is it an elemental attack, and does the enemy have a high resist?
                       Did you select Decrease HP?
                       Is the enemy's agility/defense to high?

That's all I got...

For the ones that 'miss'... Did you tick the 'HP' box? As in, tell it to decrease the HP? If you didn't, it just misses.

The only skills that don't take damage or miss are the occasional effect skill... If it's stunning or something then sometimes it doesn't hurt at all.

EDIT: Oh, Jet already said about the first point XD Well, it's something to watch out for.
