Fighting games that utterly owns you.
« on: January 08, 2009, 07:51:52 AM »
Okay, so I bought Soul calibur4 to teh PS3. It's a grand game, not as much contents as the previous two but anyway.
The character creation is swell. But sometimes you have to make your characters look like crap(Voldo's gear) just to get high enough stats to learn that new ability. But that's out of the point.

You can get these "honours" (or as I'd say; trophies) for several tasks completed. A bunch of these were: Play 100 battles online, win 10 battles online, play on all stages online, fight against 20 different battle styles online, get to rank 20 online, win 2 consecutive ranking matches online.
Now, this might sound too hard. But for nearly an entire day I only managed to fix one of  those honours: play on all stages online.
My first ranking battle was against a lvl 310. He took Taki and totally spammed me into oblivion. There wasn't a quiet moment during that fight. First strike, unblockable attacks, perfect. The guy must've earned tons of points just to beat me with all those bonuses. I on the other hand received 0 points.
And by the end of the day, I was about half way to rank 2, with 0 wins.

The thing about the ranking mathces is that they just randomly put to players against each other. So I've fought countless battles against all these lvl100+ or even 200+. It's awful to be stuck in a dance of death while facing astaroth or Rock. They just keep doing all these complicated commands that you more or less can't escape.
So I've won some rounds, that earned me 5 points each round and 6 points for first strike. But out of 3 rounds I never managed to win 3.
I fought countless Raphael and Taki players, I've met Kilikk and Seung mina, Ivy and cervantes, most people know what they're doing - and they aer doing it really freaking good. But others(Like most raphael and Amy) just keeps spamming their fastest attack o that poor Siefried can't get like a single hit.

So yeah, no characters are broken in the game. But some characters are better against another character. And those people you fight online insists on waiting till the last 5 seconds remaining on the character choice to choose their character. So they always choose the one good against mine. But that's mostly because I don't have the patience to wait around for 30 secs just to get the upper hand.
But I've realized that playing ranked matches in a desperate try to get a higher rank won't work unless you're pro-pro or a spammer. Because that's what you're gonna face.
----------------------------------------------

Brawl on the other hand would be incredible if it wasn't for the horrible lag. SC4 got like less than a second delay when clicking attacks but it works mostly.

So, any fighting games you've realized that you're a noob on compared to your online opponents?

Soul Calibur 4, oh Prpl. Shame you chose it. Soul Calibur is know, at least here in Holland, to be a nerd training ground. I know two nerds who train like hell on this game to own everyone online. It's quite sad because they give up other games just to become the best. Seriously, one of the two only plays Soul Calibur and the original Unreal Tournament. And the other one, plays Soul Calibur and... I dunno... saw him play Super Donkey Kong once.

--------------------------------------

To contribute on your question: Naruto: Rise of a Ninja. While I'm not getting owned right through my ***, I do realise that I'm a bit behind most people. Can't seem to get past round 3 of the 6 (or 7) on the online tournament mode.

I play Jump! Ultimate Stars online, and it's like the DS's version of SC4. You get "Gems" (money) each fight to buy new characters and all that, but then we get... *sigh* gem farmers. People who stand around not fighting in the free-for-all matches and gang up on the first person that attacks, and after that they start leteraly beating up your dead body just to say "Hey there, I'm hitting you arharhar." or pressing the taunt buttong nonstop.

They also taunt nonstop even when you're not dead, so it's pretty easy to get an opening.

There's also runaways, people who run and hide during all deathmatch fights and just come out to take the last person when they're weak, turtlers, and much, much, much more. It's an awesome game, but it's also the MOST ANNOYING GAME EVAR.

This kind of behaviour happens everywhere in online games. It's almost unavoidable. It's just survival of the fittest.

I commed brawl for attempting to break from that entire mould by not scrapping honours and identities altogether. It's just a shame that connecting is a nightmare.

As soon as I found out I could do that to pass the Elimination missions, I knew I should never play online except against a friend. That, and because I don't have the really good Komas either. (Still finishing the Universe mode.)

I suck at everything online, but that's just something I deal with. I play to have fun, beat who I can, die honorably, etc. I have to be the only Mario Kart DS player that does not quit if he loses the first race.

I never play anything online. Or offline, for that matter, anymore... I mean, I've been playing fire emblem again again again, but that hardly counts. Considering I want to go into the games industry, my lack of knowlege of current releases is shocking.

I myself am bloody awful at First-Person Shooters.

I tend to only move one analogue stick at a time, forget the map and wander about blind, and fire into walls and dustbins whenever I'm trying to hit a target.

Sigh.

Reminds me of the SSBB's worldwide online matches. :P

I guess whenever you are playing online there is bound to be people who just eff around. That's actually one of the reasons why I like online matches.

While not a fighting game, Bomberman Blast has been pretty good to me. Most online players are pretty much E-D ranks, with a few guest players who often suck horribly. It makes it more of a variable as to who wins, until ONE B-A rank player shows up and kicks everyone's ***. Connection is just an absolute bitch, though.

Also, I've found that Super Smash Bros. is probably the only fighting game that I'll ever be good at. :(

Technically SSBB owns me, since I am a SSBM player and my mind fucks up due to floatyness and lack of ATs. Also every time ive tried playing SSBB online ive had at LEAST 1.5 sec delay on every move, cant even play like that.

I've never claimed to be a fan of fighting games, since most rely on attack and button-combination memorization, and I see no reason why that should be a part of the game. If it's done right, you get a wealth of moves that take almost no thought to pull off correctly.

Which is why I like Smash Bros. Everything is kept simple, so you can do whatever you want to without having to go through a move list to figure out how to do it, and then practicing to make sure that you can get it right, and then memorizing the command so that you can pull it out at will. I do enjoy Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive, though. I guess it's because they still feel natural to me, so I don't need to worry about a move list to fight.

I'm godly at shooters. Also, sticks? PC is where it's at for a shooter, yo. Most are better in every way.

I think it'd be fair to say that Toribash owns me. Then again, it pretty much can own anyone due to the advanced nature of the controls... Which are just insane.

I suck horribly at Custom Robo Arena; I played online once (even with the broken Needle Gun equipped), and quickly got floored.

I myself don't really play to win, but to have fun. It's kinda boring, though, getting floored all the time at EVERYTHING. Here's hoping I do better in J!US...

I can never beat INO. (Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus.) Hell, I have a hard time beating Sol, the fight before her.

Other than that, I suck at Tekken.
