Hey, guys. Well it's that time, time to get a new computer and i'd like your help with somthing. You see latley i've eard alot of bad things about Windows Vista, and I've been wondering: Is it realy the best? Also I could use a little bit of help deciding inbetween the three diffrent models i'm looking at. They are..

Vista isn't really as bad as everyone makes out.

Imagine you leave your bedroom, and when you get back to it it's been rearranged and tidied, so nothing is where you left it but at least everything looks nice. Also there is a bouncer at the door who stops and searches everyone who tries to enter, including you. That's what Vista is like.

Also I'd recommend avoiding Dell. Shocking reliability.

Vista is more for the looks. XP works better in practise, at least for me.

Vista's okay
Not the best windows, but it's okay
And Drag's explanation is one of the best of Vista that I've heard

Vista is really crappy if your machine has no power.

I had an AcerAspire3690 that came with Vista Home Basic, I upgraded to premium.
Thed machine had like 512ram or some junk. It had a single lonely processor, and a shitty graphics card I had a frustrating time using any windows functions. Multiple Applications running at the same time would lag and such.

About a month ago I got a refurbished Gateway FX gaming machine. It came with Home premium.
I havent gotten around to switching from Norton to something that isnt a resource hog yet...but it hasnt affected anything.
Now I can take advantage of some more of the vista do-dads i couldnt before and make a non biassed judgement call

Vista is Decent. XP was more practical for the PC devotee, but if youre running it on a good machine, then its fine.
Some of the Machine specific factory bloatware for vista is a bit heavy, and some people just arent smart enough to change windows settings around for it to run how you want it to.

If your dislike simply comes from a fear of change and properly figuring out the minute differences in Interface, then you can just change your settings so that it works like XP

I wouldnt get too attached to any OS though, things are moving forward at a stupid rate...its all about delivering new product to the consumer, and by the time many of you are working adult consumers, youre gonna have so much awesome

I wouldn't bother holding out for Windows 7 either. If you've got a nice chunk of cash, I'd just drop it on an Apple and install XP on it, great machine power and when you realize that OSX is superior in every way, all you'll have to do is boot up differently.

A hacked version of XP can be downloaded in an hour at most via torrent, so whatever you decide on, you always have that option. I've never partitioned and installed a separate OS through windows, but it's easy as pie on Mac.

Have you seen my sig?  Based on a true story, courtesy of Fista.  It does many annoying and mostly pointless things, such as interrupting all running applications to restart your computer to install 'upgrades'.

Pros-
1. Like effing Fort Knox security-wise.
2. Looks fantastic.
3. Gadgets.
4. Latest Direct X versions for hardcore gamers.
5. The "search" function saves you years finding things.

Cons-
1. Like effing Fort Knox security-wise. (yeah, it gets rather annoying)
2. Icons can sometimes rearrange themselves in a ridiculous way and make no sense
and have no reasoning behind it.
3. The "search" function saves you years finding things. But the security popups
probably take that time back off you.
4. MANY, MANY programs I've tried crash a lot, don't work properly or just simply won't
open. I can't get RPG Maker 2000 to work on Vista, but 2003 works great. If you're big on
freeware/retro games, prepare to get disappointed now and again.

That is possibly the greatest analogy I have ever heard for Vista.

I'm getting used to vista. I admit I was probably happier with XP, but vista's pretty natural to me and on the most part it doesn't annoy me.

Vista can't handle any recent games with music on in the background.
It can also occasionally freeze while people are contacting you on msn - and you're playing something.
Vista can't show GIF animations correctly.
Old games don't work properly on Vista. Like worms, Monkey island and so on.
Vista doesn't really work well with Hamachi so you and your buddies' LAN weekend can get very complicated if you are supposed to host.
