Yes, why make a thread if he's literally in the same room as you?

Nope, just general paranoia.  I think the meds have that covered, though.

I guess this can just die.  I was trying to make people think we are different, but it seems no one really believes it anyway.   So I'll give up.

...sigh.  I guess because of John Brown, I've lost any credibility I might have had.

First off, I did everything via PM because I didn't want to make public accusations or blame anyone for things even if I felt they were true. I was more than willing to keep everything a secret, even from the other mods if need be, as long as everyone played nice. You can blame your Mr. Brown for going public when he said that some mods thought you two were the same person. I would have never done it myself. Not my style. But, as a member of the staff, I am obligated to defend myself against accusations, so the game was up. So if you're sad about your reputation, you might want to have a talk with your little friend about him dragging you into his problems publicly. If this person even exists.

'sides, even now, it's not like there is any talk of bans or even warnings. It was a weird little misadventure in a long history of Charas strange events. I've seen a lot worse. The fact that most people are walking away from this one grinning, or at least confused and not annoyed, means it's fine by me.

For the record, IPs don't work that way. I really can't stand it when people talk about technology they don't understand, so time to learn!

IP addresses are assigned to an machine by an ISP via a protocol called DHCP. Nowadays, most broadband connections are given a single IP per connection, which basically means each house with internet gets 1 IP address. This address is saved, but only ASSIGNED when you connect.

This one's important: IPs are not saved by a machine, the are assigned when you connect to the internet.

If your computer is the only machine hooked up to the modem, then the IP address is assigned to your computer. Most people use routers to connect multiple computers. In these setups, the router is the machine assigned an IP. The router handles the various machines working under one IP, and everyone's happy.

So going to a friend's house and using their computer, or using a laptop on their network, means you will both have the same IP at that time.

Funny thing though. SMF is not a stupid forum system and logs all IPs ever used to connect. If you used a friend's computer once, but then went home and used your own again, you would have two IPs on file. In fact, some of our members have hundreds of IPs on file, either because of anonymizing proxies that switch IPs every page request, or just using a service like AOL that assigns a new IP on every connection.

More can be found out about networking and how the internet works by reading up on the OSI Model.

I hate setting up static IPs.

I had been trying to convince John Brown to join Charas for quite a while.  After all, he is the one who found it first (via Drak's review of "GULPY GULPY!") and showed me.  He lost interest.  I joined.

On Saturday, he finally joined.  Two days later he deleted his account.  The reason he told me?

"Your forum is too slow."

John Brown, AKA Johnny Five-Aces, you'll be missed.  Maybe.

I really feel quite complimented. A lot of people are joining charas and asking me to send them my games :D

Gulpy Gulpy is quite the masterpiece :D
