Biggest disappointment ever: Dragon fruit!

It looks and feels amazing. I'd wanted to eat one for years. It just looked like the
most perfect, kiwi-like fruit imaginible.

Awful. Tastes of nothing whatsoever.

HOW COULD YOU DISS THE POWER OF THE DRAGON FRUIT?!

Durian fruit is awesome.

Star fruit, dragon fruit, and anything lychee is generally rad too.

I get to cook with all sorts of exotic produce. Lately ive been working with a lot of ancient strains of carrots and beets. The restaraunt I work at
deals with "all natural organic" produce whenever possible. Its awesome, because I get to research the specials Im going to run, and play with them.

Damn... you're lucky man. Where do you work, anyhow?

This thread is extremely informative!
I wish I could try some of these awesome fruits but I have no idea where I can get them...

Never heard of it. They would be cool to grow. I've always wondered if Yabloko Malokos from MGS3 are real... they're supposed to have a star shape in the middle if you cut it lengthwise.

You mean a starfruit?

I love citrus! ... ... Too bad none of this stuff is ever available up here in freaking Vermont. We just get the generic fruit, like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and the like. Still like them, but want something new for a change.

Do I need a reason to want to hurt you? Even if it is only in your dreams.

Anyway, that star fruit looks pretty good, wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of them.

That star fruit looks kinda icky in my opinion.

And the only supermarkets down here are Wal Mart and Safeway.
I think there's a Freddies also, but I don't know.

I've tried some weird fruit in my day, but no pomelo. I'll have to put that on my to-do list.

Since we're talking about crazy fruit, I wanted to see if anyone's had durian.

It's a giant spiky-*** football of a fruit that grows high up in the trees of Indonesia. When ripe, it drops off the trees with no warning, possibly killing anyone below. That's right, this fruit has claimed lives. It also smells like rotting death and is banned in many airports and hotels across the world. But supposedly if you can get past the stench, it tastes like rich custard.

At a nearby Asian supermarket, they were selling durian in an airtight container...but I haven't gotten the courage to try it.
Some fruits are hardcore. This fruit, however, is pure fuckin' death metal.

I think I could have the courage to. I mean, I eat oysters which are pretty strong in smell and I can stand various pungent odors (except heavy body odor which I rank as the highest currently). I even at times drink apple cider vinegar, not in large amounts, it is very strong in taste and smell. I believe I could handle a smelly fruit if it has a nice taste. =D

What I want to try however is a pawpaw which grows natively here, but as of yet I have only caugh the dried husk remains of the fruit.

The fact there's no fine for carrying a durian seems to imply you'll get jailed for it, clearly.

I just love the quotes pertaining to this fruit.
Quote
its odor is best described as pig-****, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away.
VS
Quote
A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds gives the best general idea of it, but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind cream-cheese, onion-sauce, sherry-wine, and other incongruous dishes. Then there is a rich glutinous smoothness in the pulp which nothing else possesses, but which adds to its delicacy. It is neither acid nor sweet nor juicy; yet it wants neither of these qualities, for it is in itself perfect. It produces no nausea or other bad effect, and the more you eat of it the less you feel inclined to stop. In fact, to eat Durians is a new sensation worth a voyage to the East to experience. ... as producing a food of the most exquisite flavour it is unsurpassed.

...God, we do not get good fruits around here in the boring Northeast/Southwest US.
