Requiring Internet Connection for a game with no online capability is fail.
I doubt they'll ever manage to find a good way to counter piracy since pirates will always find a way around. They'll probably just lose customers because their attempts will make it worst for non pirates than actual pirates, just like in that case apparently. They shouldn't even bother. Yeah, sure, they'll get less money from those pirates, but at least they won't take the risk of losing customers as well.

True that. They shouldn't be doing this anyways. When people start trying to enforce this, they inevitably hurt the legit customers as well.

I don't think so.
The reason why Spore got so much heat though is because most of the info wasn't detailed, which caused things to happen without the users prior knowledge or consent.
I haven't heard much about Assassin's Creed II though, so I'm not sure what the story is on that.
