Laryngitis
« on: May 12, 2011, 02:55:24 PM »
So, I'm recovering from laryngitis right now. I can talk, but my vocal chords aren't strong enough to sing.

This poses a problem.

I'm supposed to sing today and tomorrow. Now, if I can't sing today it's alright. But tomorrow is basically a must for my voice. I've been taking antibiotics since last Friday, but I've had my talking abilities since Sunday. Does anybody know of any decent remedies that can help me get to an almost-full recovery by tomorrow? I'm trying hot tea (peppermint) right now, and it's simply the most disgusting thing I've ever drank in my life. Every kind of tea is, for that matter.

Any suggestions?

What exactly are you singing for?
Just trying to get my bearings on the severity of the situation.

My school's chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota is hosting their American Musicale tomorrow night. They decided to do an a capella Michael Jackson medley (mixed voices), and they gave me one of the lead parts. We had our dress rehearsal last night, so they tried to sub me with our choir director. Unfortunately, he is not a pop singer at all. It was really bad each time they ran through it. And today we're supposed to perform it on campus as a preview for the entire musicale.

Ugh, it's not really good to sing with laryngitis at all, whether you're suffering from it or recovering from it. You could really hurt your vocal chords if you do that. If you still insist on singing for this thing, the only recommendations I have for you are to take LOTS of Vitamin C and avoid any dairy products, as those tend to coat your throat and make it difficult to sing.

Also, since you said that you don't have to sing today, don't. Save your voice.

Retiring the deadlines because I think I've proven that I can get stuff done. It might come on my own time, but it will be better quality that way.

Pants.

This is my best advice.
Considering you are recovering from being ill, however, talk with the director about it.

Isn't SAI a women's fraternity...?  It is at my college anyway.

But really, you could try asking one of the voice professors for some advice.  I'm sure they would be of a lot of help.

SAI. Women's. Funny.

Anyway, try gargling with hot salt water. Good for your throat, or something.

XD Yea, SAI is women's frat. I'm a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the arrangement is for mixed voices, so they asked some of us to join them.

I did talk with my voice instructor. She told me that, basically, all I can do is sit and wait for my vocal chords to get better. It's really depressing. I already had to miss my chapter's camping retreat last weekend due to illness. I've never been camping. Always wanted to go. AND I spent $25 worth of camping food stuffs. This has been a bum couple of weeks for me :/

You could sit outside in the rain for about 12 hours. That's basically like camping.

Effing hilarious.

I don't really know much about laryngitis, but think of the long-term. Don't push yourself into singing tomorrow if it could possibly damage your vocal cords.

My vocal teacher says some certain type of room temperature grape juice. Don't remember what kind, though.

I don't know anything about college music programs, but shouldn't you have an understudy or something?

If you really must sing, what exactly is your part? I may be able to help you.
<- Very good R&B singer ^_^

edit: I've never had laryngitis but my mom had it once. The only thing that cured it was time.
