Occupy What?
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:31:41 AM »
https://occupywallst.org/

Opinions? Criticism? Support? What does Charas think about this movement? Do you think it should even be called a movement?

Now, I know I've been absent from Charas for a while... sorry =x and I've noticed I like to come back and comment on... I guess you'd say, big topics? I've just been sucked into college and work with little time for other things. But anyways, I've been following this since it started, I'm curious what you all think.

Also, I understand if people are put off by (or even snickering a little) at the widespread use of euphemisms such as "brother and sister" or "solidarity".

I don't mind a little protest, just as long as it's peaceful. It gives something people to think about when the elections come up.

There's really not better ways. Peaceful protests get press time. Press time influences voting trends. Voting trends make politicians have to be careful with what they say or do that could inflame their support base.

It takes time, and it requires a lot of people, and it's slow, but this country has a good history of success with it.

What, no, I didn't say peaceful protests weren't the best. I just thought there are other places/ways/reasons to protest.

I get what you're saying. I've been reading a lot about what they stand for. The best way to sum up their demands is removal of corporate influence over politicians. Last year, the Supreme Court passed made a decision which grants corporate person hood, meaning that corporations have the same rights as people under US law. I agree with their demand to repeal this decision, but that's only the tip of the iceberg.

We're too used to the "reality" that business should have this much power over us. Businesses are supposed to be small collections of labour, sustaining livelihood- not giant political bodies designed to bend the law for the benefit of a select few.

If we looked back from a hundred years from now we would think it was ridiculous that a small group of businesses were allowed to run entire countries.

http://rt.com/news/occupy-boston-police-brutality-545/

I stayed up late to watch the live feed, the cops rolled in around 1:30 in the morning in massive numbers. Heard whispers that they were heavily aided by the state police. Nothing confirmed. The dispute was that the protesters had to leave the Greenway, which they had occupied because their original camp had grown too small for the number of people there. Police confiscated tents, chairs, tarps, computers, everything, and threw them in to dump trucks that were waiting on one side of the park. Greenway was renovated recently, costing 150,000 dollars.

I have not seen any US news coverage of this event yet.

There won't be any US news coverage about this lol. These people are protesting many things, one of the major ones is that the wealthiest 1% owns 40% of the country. Another is that large corporations hold more power over our government than the people. Since the news is run by the wealthy and the corporations, no news station will cover it.

I agree with these protests, and if I lived closer, I would be there right now. The whole US system is really F***ed up right now, and we need it to change.

Several months back, I protested in my state's capitol for similar reasons. Our governor, Scott Walker, is a douche.

In case you guys didn't figure this out by now, I'm very liberal.

So you participated in the unions strikes in Wisconsin? That's awesome. We need unions. Apparently, on monday, ten thousand Union workers marched with Occupy Boston. Phenomenal numbers.

I went down to occupy Boston the other day because I live only an hour and a half away. It seemed like everyone was still a little rattled by the previous night. But I got to talking to people, and a lot of them are pretty down to earth. Unfortunately, mostly the rude and/or more radical people are the ones who really stand out.
