Pokemon TCG: same game as we played then?
« on: June 19, 2012, 03:21:55 PM »
I was quite busy price checking my older extras from two full card cases and I notice all the newer rare and whatnot cards that are being sold on the site and can't help but wonder:

"Was the game better when we played (when wizards controlled the manufacturing) as such that the new kids playing today have much more powerful cards to use and such and that they seem to be spoiled and have many things given to them for nothing such as attacks with no extreme costs or very overpowered cards and attacks such as moves requiring no coin flips for 60 or more damage or a flip chain that can do over 500?"

I truly believe that there is a hidden meaning here that kids today get a lot of things for nothing and don't have to work for anything anymore especially the case with the card game, I mean, 500 damage if you get 5 heads in a row on a Steelix that has a 100x move? "flip until you get tails."

Agree, Disagree? Discuss...

Note: I'm in no way considering playing again. I am just going to sell the old stuff and be done with it, but I had this revelation and wanted to see if others had the same idea.

In the MTG world we call it 'power creep'.  It means that a new set has stronger cards in it to make people want to buy them to replace their old cards.  Magic gets around it by making it so only the last few sets are tournament legal, meaning that you have to invest in the new lot to compete.  I'm guessing the other card games do that too, but for some reason they still feel the need to power creep anyway.  Yugioh did it a lot... I remember 1800 being the best attack you could get for a level 4, and then it was 1900, then 2000...

Yet there are a lot of cards in the older sets that would combat this, but they couldn't find a work around because of the outdatedness of certain cards, that's is the problem with rotation. Gust of Wind (sends a Pokemon back to the bench forcefully and forces your opponent to choose a different one) would be quite handy about now,but never had a reprint. I'm more concerned with collection again as there is a new true dragon type set coming out this 4th quarter and I think it will be worth reselling. Yet yeah, Power Creep is always an issue and even prices reflect this.

Yeah bro, almost all games make more powerful cards as the game goes on. Selling strategy.

Oldschool MTG almost had an anti-power creep. Early game cards were so powerful that they were restricted, banned, or simply not reprinted in later sets. There was a period of time when expansions were offering next to nothing of value - Fallen Empires, Ice Age, Homestead (I believe?) were all pretty boring and didn't interest me much when building my decks.

You still playing magic, Sai?  Everything's returning to Ravnica soon.

Yeah, this is why I personally stick with things like poker or hold 'em when I want to play a card game. Though, I really did enjoy MTG and Pokemon TCG when I was a kid.

EDIT: and by kid, I mean a few years ago when I was 18 xD

I'm still playing Magic.
Some of the latest gimmicks are ridiculous...I'm lookin' at you, werewolves.

The game now, and when I played it back in...like...I think '05 is crazy.
Stopped playing right when those weird level up cards came out.

The only time I play cards is when there is lots of alcohol involved and I'm about to make bad life choices. haha

I think the new cards are certainly overpowered compared to the old ones but there are pretty reasonable when you put them against eachother.  I don't mind all the new stuff, but I guess I really haven't been following it too closely.

Never been that much into card games, got something called bad luck that just pushes me off edges and watches me burn. Also, too many rules when I was a kid. Combine that with the ridiculous choice to sell the stuff in original english packs with only english manuals and you might see where the problem is.

I didn't mind werewolves as a mechanic... They were really cool at the pre-releases. But I don't particularly like werewolves as a mythical creature anyway so I wasn't interested in making a deck of 'em.

Now with the next core set... There's gonna be rings of power!  One for each colour!  That's something I'm bound to make a deck around.

I think that the double faced cards are too...gimmicky to ever work right.
The fact that they're difficult to sleeve unless you get terrible sleeves doesn't help.
