Of course it's just a first experient!
I am here to ask you all experienced spriters to help me with colors :D

If you want to try to help, i have an idea...
Just download the forst charas page as HTML, and look in the top of the file: All colors are defined within the body and the style tags.
Actually, this is the part:
Quote

.RED and .GREEN are not used.
Body links is that "gold" color of all the links
evidenced is the color of titles (as "Last 10 Forum discussions")
languages is the border color of flags

Saving it as HTML you may be able to change these values to look for a different combination.
When you have one you feel is good, just post here your modifyed body+style tags and a screenshot of the resulting page.
This way we could "vote" for proposed layouts faster ;)

Alex, no offense, but I have to be honest with you here.

I think new the color scheme for the layout is terrible. The order of the links and stuff is fine, but the colors are completely off.

I am pretty sure the "problem" color is the gold. The rest of the layout is striking similar to the forums, but the gold looks bad on the blue background. Same with that off-yellow banner color.

Perhaps you could try changing the colors to look more like the forum's. So, instead of gold and yellow, perhaps white, silver, or grey.

Ok, let's try! What do you think of this?
Silver replaced gold, here:

hmmm.. after 2 hours of work, i'm done.. lol.. could've been less cuz i was chatting with a VIP but wtheck.. hehe

http://www.geocities.com/x_f3r_games/charas/layout.html

ok, here's how the layout will work. it'll be best viewed on a 800x600 resolution screen. the field where it says "wazzup" has to be an iFrame or else the thing will go mumbo jumbo + it'll be a waste of space even tho it's just a few kb.

i made it look alot like the forums but the navigation bar is not yet colored.. lol.. i've checked the source HTML from this forum but it's hard to find T_T

btw, it's meant for 800x600 cuz the width is 700 pixels. i wanted to resize it to 780 in width, but i'm too lazy :P

the image map is pretty buggy tho.. when you link the images, they split apart.. a disaster.. but i know alex has a solution cuz he knows CSS. :D

this was my first shot in making a professional layout and i made it in 2 hours :D

alex, i deserve a 500 MB hosting from u + unlimited bandwidth.. hahaha j/k

Comments on how to improve the layout is welcomed ;)

enjoy

Not bad!
Fast comments:

What about adding a "second" navbar somewhere else?
I mean: leaving the "Main", "Site" and "Last 10 Forum Discussions" on the left and try to place the last resources (and maybe also the resource count you can actually see on top-right in charas) somewhere else?
This will avoid a very long page, maybe.

Splitting a 700px table, we may have:
left TD: 150px
center TD: 400px
right TD: 150px

i guess 400px is fine for the news table (now the "base" is 320px, variable).

Comments?

P.S.: it's "charas-project.net", not "charas-project/net" :D

correction :D it's now 480 in width! i've resized the banner and the image map, which still has the problem i don't know how to solve. when you link the images, they seperate. anyway, here's the link.

http://www.geocities.com/x_f3r_games/charas2/layout.html

i didn't delete the earlier one so you can compare. it's barely even 250 KB combined so it won't effect the storage in my Geocities account.

anyway, the "base" is an iFrame. why i chose iFrame? because it'll be harder to edit stuff when you want to.. i mean.. it's about 200 lines :P plus it's easier to navigate and saves time to those who have slow connections.

the updates and news area, i think there's no need to put any avatars of anything cuz Alex is the only one who updates stuff. and if you do put avatars, it'll look like my homepage! :P

http://www.geocities.com/x_f3r_games

enjoy!

EDIT:

with that layout, it's best to stay away from Gold, Grey and Red. I'm using all the colors this forum has that i could find. :D

tell me if you want the zip. i'll upload it so you can download it. ;)

oh yeah.. i got this terrible (in a good way) idea for the generators. it should also help save time for users with slow connections but the wait/load time will be a tad longer.

it will consist of multiple frames/iFrames tho, that's why the wait/load time will be a bit longer, but navigation will be better.

Example:

"Menu.html"

"Generator.html"

you get it? there will be a menu on the left of all the menu, aka, all the resources you can choose. the width will be 125 so there can be at least 2 and 1/4 resources visible, plus you can scroll to check out the resources. same for the others.

want to experiment it? :D

Better not to use Iframes.
They're not compatible with many browsers, so...
Anyhow, editing is not a problem: with PHP i can include sections, writing them in separate files so it's easy to manage ;)

For example the top (which in your example is logo+generators+languages) is written in a file called header.php and included with one single line in every file.

About the top, we should remember that we have various languages: while writing text in different langs is simple, writing text in images is not (and heavyer for the server).
This problem touches all the text you've written inside images (top links, navigation and resources).
We should find a way to use just the background color and write the text as... text.

About the generator, i will think about it and reply better on sunday: now i'm leaving, i'll be back on saturday night.

i've got a solution but it's not gonna be pretty.. that is to manipulate the tables tag..

you do know that tables can also have their own backgrounds. so we insert the image in the table, as a background, and just write texts in it. the letters can be changed easily. it's very effective but when i do it, it's pretty buggy.. i've just started experimenting with HTML a few days ago.

but using that method, i'll have to cut the picture into 3 sections and then use the table trick.. as for the image map, it could be easily modified..  we'll only need to link the texts.. problem is, some languages have more letters in one word.

oki doki.. it's done.

http://www.geocities.com/x_f3r_games/charas3/layout.html

you can change ANY text EXCEPT for the "-Charas-project.net" in the image map. now there's no more iFrame.

give me comments on how it looks, everyone :P
