Why is the sword overlapping the wings? With that get-out, I'd wear it on my waist or at least underneath the wings.

Yes, that would render the wings restricted so much that they would be completely unusable. I would wear them under the wings to conceal it for an unexpected counter-attack in case I'm attacked first.
