TSG Poll: Party Layout
« on: September 18, 2004, 02:25:07 PM »
I was torn a li'l unsure about how to do certain things in The Secret Game, so I thought I'd ask Charas in general. It's for you, anyway.
You see, I was wonderin' which way you'd like me to set the party layout.
I am torn between three ways:

1: Single char party.
You will only have 1 character in the party, which cannot be changed during missions.
Pro: Easiest to do.
Con: Pretty boring.

2: 4-char party.
Like in most RPGs, 4 characters in the party which can be switched around and stuff prior to missions.
Pro: Probably the best balance.
Con: Hardest to do... cos... it just is, ok.

3: ALL char party
All characters will be available to you at all times. In any mission, you have access to any character unlocked.
Pro: Ummm....
Con: Will make game SUPER-EASY.

Well, it depends. By 4 char system you mean four people in your party at once? If it fits the difficulty of the game then do that, but if you can beat the missions with one person, then do a system where prior to the mission you choose two or three backup chars which you can become if you fail. You'd have to start over on the mission, and if you wanna get REALLY fancy increase the difficulty since they know your there.

Um, nah I don't think I'll do that.

What else is he supposed to do?
Pretend he loves it?
I think it should be just a choose you character at the start of the mission thing.

In my opinion Red Giant, why don't you try all 3 in different missions?

Like, there may be a certain mission where one of the characters wants to go alone or on the final mission, everyone joins in the battle!

Try different variations and see what works best.

Thats my opinion....

I chose number three, to have all that are available, usable. A suggestion I would like to make, though I doubt you'd want to do it, and that's fine, is that you give the player the option to select which one s/he wants to do at the beginning of the game.

2nd option. 1 party member makes battles very boring, and having all unlocked means a switch system. I have yet to figure out how to make a perfect switch system (the game ends if the character you are switching out is the only one still alive) so that is probably too hard.

If all characters are available at the same time, battles might start to get repetitive. If you only get to choose 4, there can be more strategy involved with setting up your party. Of course, this all depends on how varied the monsters and bosses are. Also, having only a certain selection to choose from for each mission might help.

Poppycock.
It would take sexystyle planning if you only got one character for a mission.

I suggest the middle option, so then it is harder for you to program.
