About Story Ideas
« on: May 24, 2005, 12:14:05 AM »
I was just curious about a few things pertaining to story ideas.

How/where do you come up with the main ideas in your story? Do you get an insperation from a movie or show? Is it all original?

How long does it take you to complete your story, at what point do you start working on your game, and at what point to you post the story at forums such as charas?

And Finally, how long is it usually before you find a better story and start to work on a new game? Or do you always stick to your current game?

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Well with me, my whole story came from inspiration and the reality of our world.  I didn't get anything from a movie, and all the elements to my game are things I have realized over the past few years.  That's why I believe so much in my game.

My story took me about two years to come together, because as I said that it was all inspiration, inspiration doesn't just come when you want it.  It takes time, and it varies depending on how you think, and how you see things as they are.

I posted my game before I made it to see if anyone was interested.  I think it is better to make a game if people like it.  It's good for morale, and it keeps you going....well for me at least.

That's how I feel about my game and the ideas about it.

I take all my ideas from a giant idea pool in my head. Said idea pool has been developed by me playing games, watching movies and reading books. Most of my ideas are semi-original; if I like an idea I see, I try to adapt it for my idea pool by modifying it a bit. Also, sometimes ideas just randomly pop into my head, and if I like it, I store it in my idea pool.

I don't usually post my project ideas on Charas, because I know I'll never complete one. Instead, I'm currently trying to develop a full planet, complete with a detailed history, unique species, and the like. Once I'm done that, I might be able to finish a project.

Usually I think of a really quick idea like a half dragon guy. Then I thought, How could he be half dragon? It is pretty hard for a dragon to knock up a chick. Let's make a dragon that's evolved into a humanoid. Now give the char a weapon that's made from a dragon. Now let's make 6 dragons and 6 races. Now let's say the dragon race  wants to destroy the world with the sword and voila! New game. Of course, it's not that simple, there is a lot more thought, but that's the basic idea.

My ideas are generally original, with a few elements from many of the RPGs I play and elements of the world around me. I try to make my stories relate to me in some ways, that way I have a connection to it.

isn't that how Tolkien (did i spell it right?) did the lord of the rings books?

Personally, I just do a lot of thinking. I need to write more things down though; I have a horrible memory.  a lot of research is involved too.

It comes from inspiration at first but I also need to write down a lot of things. When you get into a logical process like finding themes, creating interesting characters, the rest shapes up. A lot of analysis from past games, movies and random thoughts are put into it and hopefully the end result is good.
I also believe more in "delivery" of the storyline than an uber complicated plot so hopefully I can work that out. Final Fantasy games for example for me don't have good stories (some). People just see the total package and enjoy it, but a game like FF10 where you meet the final boss within the first 10 minutes and the whole game is getting to him and killing it, geez, anyone could of though it up, but it's the delivery.

Which Final Fantasy 8 Character Are You?

You are Laguna! Although you're way too shy with the opposite sex, you've got a heart of pure gold. You're a good leader and well liked by those who know you. Most of your friends look to your good sense when they need advice.

Take the Final Fantasy 8 Test here!

At first I just steal an idea from somewhere, add a minor tweak, add another minor tweak, add yet another minor tweak, and keep tweaking it until it's completely different.

Mine's all inspiration. like Warxe, i make up a Planet, or a world, with unique races and stuff if my project was a Medieval-Type of game. if it's futuristic, then i'll just focus on making cities, gangs or whatever.. u know.. something like a Government ruling with an iron fist-type where the world is polluted.. etc..

i'm good on character design cuz all i do is draw and draw, give him a name.. etc.. bwahaha.. names are hard to come up with tho =\

my current project is Inspired by the Filipino Telefantasia, Enchantadia (En-Can-Ta-Dee-Ah). it's pretty unique cuz none of the local filipino channels have never worked on an Epic like this one =P right now, the episodes are pretty yucky cuz they're focusing on 2 characters that met when they were young, thing was they dont know that it was them.. so yeah.. and the ppl playing those roles are a Love Team so bleh.. no action (as in wars.. etc), all mush.. ~.~

Okay, to make stories I see things in the real world first. I get every negative and positive thing that I can and use it to develop the story. That is why most of my stories are about politics and philosophy. I also read a lot for inspiration.
