Music Compositions
« on: June 19, 2005, 08:55:35 PM »
When Allen isn't composing for games, he composes for his more.. personal projects. In this case, it's an album titled nihilism.

I today just finished the second track, or to an extent finished since I'll be nit-picking the crap out of it until I finish the whole album. There are several other pieces at the same state for this project, however this one appealed to me the most.

I wouldn't mind hearing what others think of it, be it simple posative feedback, or in-depth critiques (which are just as important, probably more).

The piece I will present is titled sleep of nothingness.

Click me for a midi file, you moderate spender.

or

Click me for an mp3 file, you patient individual.

I really don't know what you'll all think of it.. as Allen isn't sure what to think either. I'm told that when it comes to anything relating to art that I'm rather modest, but then again I might just suck. So feel free to let the truth be told. Allen can take it. ^_^

Also, if interested.. the lyrics can be located here. The clarinet is the vocal line, sort of a standard for me.

Interesting song Allen. You're really good at composing. I'm trying to think of what this style of song reminds me of, but I can't really think right now. (XD) But anyway, I like it, it sounds pretty cool. Oh, I guess it kinda reminds me of a space type song. I dunno...Good job! ^^

Heh, many thanks Ace. ^_^

I'll probably post some other songs from the album I have at a later date. I'm trying to vary the styles throughout the album anyway, so they won't be too much like this.
I've actually never done a piece like this before anyway.

Nice, I get some kinda FFL feeling from it. But I can't figure out how the lyrics go...

EDIT: Dude, play the midi and mp3 at the same time. Sounds awesome.

Prpl_Mage, by all means feel free to save it. That's very nice to hear. ^_^
There will be at least one more song with a similar feel to this one on the album. My webpage has the intro track, de nihility, for download if interested. It's not a large file since it's only 40 seconds.

Well, if you have Guitar Pro 4 I could give you the .gp4 file since I have the lyrics on the track above the notes of the clarinet. Allen's assuming that not too many own Guitar Pro 4 however.

Thank you all for the comments. I really appreciate it.
Composing is my life, present and future, so if anyone else has any comments, or suggestions, please feel free to share.

That's probably a more realistic answer. Thanks Asakura.

I've still got a lot to improve on, and that's what studying is for.
I think the more theory one understands, the works will really show it more.

It's amazing how many bands out there don't even really seem to know even some of the most basic conecepts. That's all right when one is starting out however.

Not bad. But if you're going to do an MP3 version, there's a lot more you can do with it. For example, your drum beats are really raw and annoying, but in the midi it's okay because there's not much to work with. But if you're doing an mp3 you should experiment with different types of drums, as well as their volume levels and effects.

What program did you use for the mp3?

In the midi version, that part that sort of vibratos and then the music pauses for a few seconds, didn't seem placed right the 2nd time. It just sounded a bit off, of course, I don't hear a problem with that in the MP3 version.

Also, what exactly would someone call this genre of music you are composing?

Asakura, I'll surely look into that part about the vibrato. I believe I know what part you are speaking of, and will check into it.

About the genre, that's actually a good question.. I'm really not positive how to label it myself. For this piece specifically I was trying to get a darker kinda classical feel, yet gothic in a way by implementing baroque instruments such as the harpsichord.
I was also trying to make a piece similar to the style of a japanese band called Moi dix Mois.

Well, I use Guitar Pro 4 to make my music, and convert the file from there to a wav, then use yamp to make the wav an mp3.. So it's not like I hear the drums in the mp3 when I'm editing it.. o_o
The volume is a problem in the last C section I believe when it comes to drums. It was intended to add more emphasis, but just ended up being a pain more likely.
My pieces ussually don't have drumming repetiton to this degree either.

Thank you all for the suggestions. They are very appreciated.

*hits thread with an oboe*

Today I finished another composition for my nihilism project.
I now have only one more track to complete to meet my six track quota, however I may attempt a few more. Not going to think into that too much for a while however and just focus on getting the planned completed.

Alright, now the piece Allen is presenting today is titled evermore.
I would like to hear any comments, critiques or insults if anybody has any. And to clarify, the song was inspired by Queen's Bijou.

Click here for a midi file

The song is still in its pending phase, and it's possible that the B section with the clarinet will be lengthened eight measures or so.

Evermore is a different style compared to Sleep of Nothingness. It's more of an ambient music than a song if you ask me. It reminds me a little of 'Brambles' because it's a calm song and a little repetitive, probably on purpose.

A good song but I prefer Sleep of Nothingness.
