How to Make a Trailer in a Nutshell
« on: July 15, 2005, 08:09:29 AM »
Alright, I figured I'd make this so that the number of PM's I get with this question decreases. And because I'm bored. :p So, how do I make a trailer? Well, I'll go step by step.

Step 1: First you need a screen recording program. I use Fraps, but I use the older version, not the newer, so I'm not sure if it's the same or  not. If the newer version doesn't work for you, then I guess you'll have to find a different one by searching google or something. Now, one thing that's bad about the newer one is it says "fraps.com" or something at the top of the recorded clip if it's not registered. So I've included the link of the program InsaneJP uses. Get it here.

Step 2: Alright, now what I do is find my background song, because for me at least, I base how the trailer is set up on the background music.

Step 3: Now you need to record the screens. I don't know how the version InsaneJP uses works, so hopefully it's self explanatory. InsaneJP did tell me this though. "Change the video options to 100, 10, 10 , 100". So I guess you might want to do that. (lol) Once you've recorded the screens, you have to import them to Windows Movie Maker.

Step 4: Open Windows Movie Maker, which should be somewhere in your "All programs" list. First you want to import your music. Click File, and then Import into Collections. Import the song.

Step 5: Now Import your clips. You have the choice to import them all at once or one by one, I don't think it really matters. I've done it one by one, but like I said, it shouldn't matter.

Step 6: Click Show Timeline in Windows Movie Maker, and then now it's just drag and drop from here. You can zoom in and out, I suggest zooming in because it's easier to see the duration.

Step 7: In order to add special effects, such as text and such do the following.

Text: Click Tools and then go to Titles and Credits. Choose whether you want it at the beginning of the movie, on the selected clip, before the selected clip, after the selected clip, or the end of the movie. In the upper box, the text is large, such as a title. In the lower box, the text is small, such as a subtitle. There are also more options near the bottom. You can change the title animation as well as the text itself.

Video Effects: Click Tools and then Video Effects. If you want this effect on a certain clip, just drag it onto it. Or, right click the clip itself, and click video effects.

Video Transitions: Click Tools and then Video Transitions. Choose the screen transition you want, and drag it in between the two clips you want it at.

Step 8: Once you are done compiling the clips, video effects, transitions, text, etc. you need to export the trailer into video format, so it's not a windows movie maker file. In order to do this, click File and then Save Movie File. Click My Computer for the Movie Location. Make a name, choose where you want to save it, and then the movie setting is up to you.

So, that's it. Pretty much everything is self explanatory, but this will just solve the few questions you might have about it. Hopefully this will prevent the many questions I or others recieve about trailer making. Hey Insane, if there's anything else about the program you use, please feel free to say so in the topic. Hope this helps! ^^

BlackIceDept, I don't know where Ace lives but there's something I like to call 'Time-change-in-different-countries'.
Like here in Holland, when I post in my morning, it looks like it's night in the US.
