Complicity.

I was with my friends, a boy and a girl. I wont name any names. We went to UDF and he stole some Corona. (got away with that) Then we walked on to Sam Goodys. He went in, stole a FMA DVD (he's stolen them before, and tons of other ****). Then he tried to steal some porn DVDs. What went wrong was, we were the only ones in the store, and they heard the wrapper's crinkling. They caught him, and told us all to leave, but as he walked out the door, the alarm went off, and they told him to stay.

Here's the bullsh!t part: Me and the girl were waiting for him, when they told us to go om because he was being arrested. I picked up his bookbag that he had left outside and was gonna hang onto it until I saw him again (like any normal friend would). Me and her got a bit down the street and the police pulls over and takes us back to Sam's. I'm found with his Corona (that he put in his bag), but I explained it was his, and he later confirmed it in the station.

Anyways, I was taken in and charged with complicity to theft. Basically, it means that simply because I was with him and didn't stop him or notify the police, I was apart of it. And so is true for the girl. I admitted that I knew he was going to steal, but I didn't know what, and I didn't help in the act, nor I did I tell him too, and he wasnt doing it for me. But I wasnt about to tell on my friend, and he probably wouldnt have listened to me if I had told him not to anyways.

I would like to hear some opinons on what have transpired tonight. Do you think this is fair what they've done? Charging me for something I played no part in?

I dont think its fair. You didnt do anything and you didnt steal anything, you were just there, but you were a witness, but they shouldnt have questioned you.

i dont think you should have been charged.

but!!!

you were a witness, you should have reported to the coppers.

i made the same mistake 2 years ago, something closely related happened.

If you are witness to a crime, you have the responsibility to report it to the authorities.
You shouldn't have gone if you knew he was stealing stuff, and you knew you weren't going to report him. You can blame no one but yourself, and you are childish to think that you can not be held responsible.

Put yourself in my situation. You're just hanging out with some friends and one suggest you head over to a store. On the way there he says he gonna steal some stuff. Now, would you pull out your cell phone and call the police behind his back? Hell no, you just go with the flow, mind your own business and let him do whatever he's going to.

I'm not gonna lie. I was not going to turn my friend in even if I had the opportunity, but since he was caught, there was no reason to hide it, and I told them everything that happened.

When he's about to steal something, just walk off for a few mins, and then head back. You aren't near him when he stole and can plausibly deny any knowledge of it.

If I were you, I probably would have at least tried to convince him to not steal. But yeah, I agree it's pretty stupid to be arrested for not preventing a crime, especially if your friend did it. o_0

You're walking down the street. He brags that he's going to steal something. So don't be near him!

If you're going to hang out with some little twit who wants to steal stuff instead of get a job and actually earn something, then don't whine about how you got in trouble because you were with him while he stole the stuff.

Well, I did get the last laugh. This cop was all "I see you're into the rock and roll style with those clothes" and I said "actually, I'm into classical" and he was all "Well you'd better stop with the rock style and start dressing with the classical style" I almost died trying to stop myself from laughing.

Of course, the cop driving me home shouldn't have cussed me out... that wasn't nice.

He does have a point. If you're tired of people assuming your into rock, don't dress like a rock fan. Either that or just learn to live with that assumption following you around.

Another thing, the guy who stole had his tooth pulled out earlier that day, and was spiting blood in a pop bottle. It was filled up pretty bad (i was concerned with him loosing so much blood). The cops also found that in his bag.
