What happened to Charas? Q&A
« on: September 28, 2005, 10:55:28 PM »
Q: Certain things are missing, such as posts and news

A: Very obvious... it appears this is a backup of Charas at the closest date.

Well, thats what happened, this is a backup OF Charas. A copy of an older Charas. Hence why Charas Pub does NOT have all it's posts.

So in other words the recent charas is gone forever? If so, that's fine - it was only ten days, which isn't really the end of the world.

Yeah, but all other questions, such as if anything in the last 10 days is ever going to be back, how long it will take, will it go down again, and if Alex had anything to do with it are totally unknown.

Ok, I see. I'm glad this thread was here because the only other hint I had was the "charas a splode" thread.

The server was down. How it entered this phase of downness is irrelevent.

Bascially. I've got my guesses, but right now they're only guesses, so I'm going to hold on to them.

*holds bubble pipe* Theories my colleague, theories.

As it seems, 'troubles' or glitches had been apperant in the 18th day of the 9th month, signifying a 'problem', or a significant factor, was already in it's way.

From the observation of the charas back-up starting in the 18th day of the 9th month, it comes to mind, that someone had already predicted the possibilities of the developing 'problem', therefore that someone was obliged to act efficiently, thus backing-up charas.

Then as most of here recall the 25th day of the 9th month charas shut down PHP and MySQL wise. Meaning it wasn't a 'whole' server problem, because had it been so, the index page of the Charas-Project would've been shut down as well. So from this statement, we can (in theory) believe it was a MySQL database error or MySQL server  error.

There is also little evidence if this was entirely an accident or purposely done. In a way it seem like an accident because of when the database was saved (the 18th day). Meaning someone started to work on the 18 and prior to work, a back-up must've been made in case something like this would've happened. Why not save as the working person proggressed? Simple; the back-up in the 18th day had been made prior TO ANY modyfications done (if and ONLY if there was any modifications done) therefore it was the safest back-up one could restore after an incident, instead of having to restore one, where mistake in a possible 'fixing' could've been made.

So as we see, it is obvious something went wrong with the database, and HAD to be restore before the working point, thus deleting everything that might have been done from the 18th day to this day.

(note: All this is pure theory, for I was trying to convince myself I can actually be an idiot by not being one)

I see what Kijuki's saying. Alex probably expected the server to go down again, so he backed it up. And he said he was taking a vacation, I believe, but perhaps he still has access to the main database of Charas, so he was able to activate the backup. Or something.

Actually he left around his anniversary, so his going away is quite legitimate. My guess would be that some lazy, one-eyed Italian man spilled cheap rum on one of the server cabinets causing minor damage! :o
