My parents are becoming cool
« on: January 17, 2006, 08:15:38 PM »
When I was growing up I had those disciplinarian parents who would spank you if they were in a bad mood. My mom, more than my dad (his deal was magic and sorcery), wouldn't let us watch any movies or play any games that had violence in it.

My mom wouldn't allow my brother and I to watch The Simpsons, merely because she didn't like how Bart talked back to his parents and didn't want us to emulate that behavior. Well, we ended up watching it anyway, my dad laughing right along with us, while my mom was away for a few weeks. When she came back she was upset, but decided since we had already been exposed to it, there would be no point in banning the show once again. However, we were still not permitted to watch the Haloween episodes.

Enough history though, all you need to know is that my parents were pretty uncool growing up.

Present day, my dad, due to stress from personal and work life, is going through his midlife crisis. He bought himself a pretty badass looking motorcycle so he could go riding with my uncle and a few other family friends of ours. This has given us something to talk about which I am actually inclined to listen. Almost makes me feel like I'm finally bonding with my old man.

The family and I were all watching TV (Everybody Loves Raymond i believe.. my dad's show) when a commercial aired raving about Brokeback Mountain's nominations for best gay film to ever gay the screens. Now my dad has this deal where he will inform everybody in the room (and in other rooms) audibly of his disgust with any subject matter and proceeded to do so, adding "I've lost all respect for that actor (Jake Gyllenhal). I liked it better when he was the rocket boy." (referring to October Sky, one of his favorite movies). Then my mom surprised me with this quip: "Well, he's playing with different rockets now."

She started laughing, and I did one of those semi-forced cautious/nervous laughter. I have never heard anything like that come from my mom before.

So, I guess, share some revelations of when your parents did something unexpecantly cool or out of character to/around you.

I can't really relate to the strictness you mentioned first. To be honest, I've been pretty spoiled. As long as I didn't get into trouble and my parents always knew where I was, things like movies and games were fine, unless my grades started to slip, which I can never recall happening. It's pretty much still the same way for me right now, just with some more freedoms. My mom claims she doesn't like the Simpsons but I think she does because she always seems to think the jokes in it are funny. I think she just doesn't want to admit she was wrong about it. Well, anyway it's nice to see a positive thread about parents for once.

Yes. Once the appreciation sets in, you begin to look at your parents in a different light.

Eh, my folks are aight.  Although I'm kinda in the shadows of my brothers most of the time, Tis ok.  Most of my life I've been raising myself though.  I have plently of freedoms, and I can do a lot of other people cannot, but that's only because I don't do stupid s***.  Sorry for the swear, thats how I usually describe how I have freedom, and why I'm "smart".  The second I do something wrong though, I loose the privlages though.

haha I've had a similar moment. My parents were taking pictures of me and my grilfirend before a formal at mys chool, when my mom's camera ran out of film. My mom said "I guess it needs time to reload" and my dad replied: "Maybe now you girls know how it feels."

That really caught me offgaurd, but I cracked up.

I have a feeling this is steming from an uneducated view on the religion. Either that or the more common "What, no Christmas!?!? How can you live without presents!??".

but enough on that. If there is to be discussion, then it should be in a different thread.

More parental appreciativeness people!

Haha, my parents changed a lot...when I was younger...First lemme tell you guys: here, we are 5 brothers, all male. Moving on, my parents wouldnīt let my older brothers "do" stuff at home, and one of them, the older one, was cast out of my house cause of this (then he married a fine woman and has the most beautiful kid and a good job...the casting out saved his life actually).

Now, they donīt just make embarassed in front of my g/f saying that I dressed my pants backwards, but they joke about this stuff all the time...

Good thing when your parents grow up too.

No, I just see strict religion as an impedient to life. I have been (and am being) raised a Roman Catholic, but in reality I'm more a Deist or Nihilist. As far as the "no presents" thing goes, that really is not my thing. I'm quite anti-materialistic, and I think the world would be better without such things.

A religion such as the Jehovah's Witnesses just misses the point, in my opinion. But as you said, enough on that.

I have my own views on the Jehova's Witnesses, but they are more personal, the whole, no Holiday thing really wasn't a big deal. Most holidays now are just so the big companies can stuff their wallets with more money anyways.

ON TOPIC: My mom ain't too bad.

Uhm... my dad and step-mom let me smoke and drink. This happened kinda recently though. It was cool that they're ok with it. My dad even offered me some beers. Of course, I prefer vodka..

And my step-mom's cool that I smoke weed. Dunno about my dad, though.

My parents were really strict when I was living at home, I wasn't able to modify my appearance in the least, not even dying my hair. When it came to video games, they never had a real opinion, but when it came to movies/tv shows... geez I couldn't watch Simpsons until I was 16, and I'm one of those kids whose seen so few movies I can almost count them on one hand. I haven't seen the Matrix for example. Ever since I moved out though, since they have no control, they treat me much more like an adult, except for when I don't tell them where I'm going, but I guess that makes sense.

Not while you're under my roof! Ask again and you're grounded!" I was like, jeez, sorry!
