"action RPG"

IMO this "action RPG" thing doesnīt exist. I think they fit perfecly in the "Adventure" genre, reason for which Zelda shouldnīt compete with FFs and so on.

What do you guys think?

well the term RPG (Role Playing Game) Does not specify a tactical/ strategic battle rule. It merely demonstrates the fact that you play a deeper role in the storyline. It allows you more customize your character around your personality.

Once again, it doesn't specify whether or not it's a real time based battle, with some action fast paced elements or aka "action RPG"

so...yeah. it exsists.

I just ate... no seriously RPGs have been defined as the that fantasy world take they you into, no?  Because usually when there's a game that is strategy, it's strategic/RPG, & the turn based & zelda SOM  KH type don't really get classified, but yeah. And what about MMORPGs, those are action-ish, as in they are not turned based, and you're not waiting. They still aren't as active as say an FPS or third person, or sports game, but yeah, i don't know where I'm going.

You ran out of Brian juice!?! You mean... Brian Peppers's juice!?!
I never considered Zelda has an RPG. For me, RPGs are games like Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, Dragon Warrior and such thing. Zelda, for me, is adventure.

If you really want to get literal, nearly any game can be considered an RPG, as you're taking the role of a character within that game's world. This means that some games could be assigned "platformer RPG" or "FPS RPG", and it could be considered correct.

Even in the more real sense of the word, an RPG can still have an action-based battle system, or a strategy-based one, or whatever. The Zelda games, for example, use real-time fighting, but most of them have involving plots and upgradable characters and the like.

I do think Action RPGs exist. In a normal RPG, you go into battles, level up, buy equipment, etc. In an action RPG, it would be similar to Zelda except with more RPG elements like leveling up and other stuff that plain RPGs have, such as Sword of Mana or Shining Soul.

I don't conisder Zelda to be an RPG though. Mainly because you can't get your character stronger, other than just getting more hearts and items. (This may have changed in the later Zelda games, I dunno; I've only played the original and LttP)

The only Zelda that was a real RPG was Zelda 2, and it sucked.

As with most good things, there is a considerable gray area in this "RPG or not" question. In my opinion, if your character(s) are able to level up, evolve, increase in a physical or mental sense, or anything similar, it's an RPG. Of course, most things with such attributes that aren't considered RPGs are clearly classifiable into a different class, such as a platformer, or an FPS. Character customization alone doesn't necessarily make the RPG, nor does any specific viewpoint or play type. I feel that in some situations, multiple genres should be used, such as the action/RPG. A good example of this "grey area" would be Morrowind. Definitely a first-person game (assuming you don't prefer the somewhat odd third-person view), and it plays much like any FPS, yet it is considered by almost everyone to be an RPG. There are obvious hints to decide RPG or not, and, once again, beauty (or in this case, genre) is in the eye of the beholder. Of course, I'm strongly towards the idea of the "action RPG". Of course,  like I said earlier, I dual-classify it. Action/RPG. Yeah.

Following that, I think I can savely say that all the MGS games are RPGs too.

well....no. It's tactical/ action. Your role in that game is outweighed by the tatical gameplay.  lol I can savely say that too.  :p
