Reading tabs is the easiest thing out there. I'll get an example.

E|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------||
B|------3-----3--|------3-----3--|------3-----3--|------3-----3--||
G|----0-----0----|----0-----0----|----0-----0----|----0-----0----||
D|--5-----5------|--4-----4------|--2-----2------|--0-----0------||
A|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------||
E|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------||

Well, you see those lines. Those are the snares. The upper E is the high E (the one all the way down on your guitar) and the lower E is the low E (the big fat one at the top). Now, if you know the song (this is from Wake Me Up When September Ends) then you should listen to how each note is played. Then you play the notes given in the tab in the order they appear.

E|----------------|
B|------3-----3--|
G|----0-----0----|
D|--5-----5------|
A|----------------|
E|----------------|

Meaning for this part, you need to play 5-0-3 5-0-3 on the correct snare. These numbers stand for the frets. You can see "D|--5--". Meaning you should hit the snare when your finger is in the fifth fret of the D snare (3th from up). Then just play the order the numbers come. 0 = no fret, loose snare.

Any questions?

You mean from the head or the body? Well you should count from the head. Otherwise, please reform your question.

Ya, first fret is the fret closest to the headstock of the guitar.

the numbers correlate to frets on the neck, and the E A D G B E represent your strings.

The guitarist of my uncle's band AND my uncle both use it. And they've been in the music area for LOOOOONG time.

My guitar teacher also uses it.

If you think tabs are for noobs, you're the biggest one arround.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

lol chill out, I use primarily tabs for contemporary music. I'm trained on piano, so standard notation comes easier.

I can read music notation, but I use tabs to learn newer stuff. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages.
