The Earth is Flat
« on: March 16, 2007, 02:19:14 AM »
That's what THESE people believe.

No joke, this is a society of people who really think that the Earth is flat.  Whether you point out Day/Night differences, ships 'sinking' over the horizon, or various pictures taken from space, they have a ridiculous answer for everything.

You can join whether you're an FE'er (Flat-Earth) or a RE'er (Round-Earth).

So, what are your opinions on this?  What shape do you think the Earth is?

Dude, did you just learn about the Flat Earth Society? I've randomly gone there for a long while now.

One of my favorite theories for gravity is that the Earth is always moving upwards.

Yes, I just learned of it today, your point?

I love how they explain that it can be night in some parts of the world and day elsewhere.  There are apparantly these huge mountains (with fog in front of them so we can't see them) around the world's 'edge' so we cannot always see the sun.

Personally, I don't think it's right to ridicule these kinds of things. I'm sure that not all members of the Flat Earth Society believe that our planet is flat, but for the ones who actually do, insulting their beliefs is like someone insulting your religion. It just ain't nice.

It's nothing like that, because science can definately(and has) disprove the earth being flat.
And the society has been around since like the 70's, hasn't it?
It was in my Science textbook when I was in like grade 9..

No, not everyone in the forum is an "FE'er", they promote joining if you are an "RE'er" as well, they like debating.  But, any time you prove them wrong, they will just plain disregard you.  Or blame the government.

It's very funny.

Thats like saying...well... "Dont insult people who dont believe in OXYGEN" They've been disproven. Officially. With Facts, and HARD EVIDENCE. Its nothing like a religion. You cant prove that a specific RELIGON is wrong, so yeah...thats wrong. But dude....f'real. You arent even being PC,Your sentiment is being counter productive to the progress of the human race.

They also have some really crackpot theories.

Such as people who live in the southern hemisphere cannot see stars.

Oh, and Australia doesn't really exist and people who claim to be Australian are really government agents patrolling the internet.

A fair amount of human progress came from someone looking at someone else's beliefs, laughing, and wondering if there was a different way to look at things. It's okay to insult their points, because their points are not personal opinions, they're supposed scientific facts. To NOT question these things is to allow them to gain popularity, and that is a slipperly slope back into the dark ages. :p

I heard somewhere that these people were actually a very well done troll team.

Because no one could honestly be that stupid/paranoid.
