My fav has to Cecel from FF4 or whatever his name is. I never used the real names, so i don't know for sure :-p

Worst is Tidus. Yeah Vaan doesn't have much to him, but I don't think he has much against him. Tidus was just annoying, Vaan was there, but he wasn't bad.

 Reason: I just can't bring myself to like any non-humanoid characters. Though, since he almost raped Aerith, he's not that bad of a character. Just not better than every other I've played.

 So-so - Cid (FF7)
 Reason: I love that guy. Sometimes in a non-gay way.

 Best - Grandy (FFT [created])
 Reason: ...you guys didn't forget my origins, yes? I'm like, lvl 99 right now, and actually backstabbed Ramza a few times (he kept getting confused! ...sometimes.)

Cecil and Zidane definetely, just because they weren't boring cliches or plain annoying.

Worse are definetely Tidus and Vaan. I think they're both really annoying.

I'd say Firion from FF2 because he only has maybe five lines in the entire game, but it's an old game so I guess I'll cut him some slack.

And guys, I opened up not main folks too. Silly. Read the other posts too. Main character people didn't seem so intriguing.
I didn't get far in 4, the second I heard "crystals" I went into a berserker frenzy. Probably my least favorite part of 9, next to the randomass ending. I hate that breed of ending, the "oh, look, I'm randomly alive!" crap. *stabs 7, 8, 9, and X-2, especially X-2 cuz it bit*
Bests/worsts of every FF I've gotten anywhere in/watched *stuck in 6, spazzed at 4 and 5, so, yeah, I'm a lameass*

VII: Best: Rufus (one of the few villains who actually seems to have a decent reason for what he does and isn't bloody nuts, but he does pull that being alive stunt in AC. Pisser.), Worst: Aeris/Yuffie
Advent Children: Best: Kadaj's long-haired lackey (for blowing Cloud up), worst: Sephiroth/Cloud (both pulling my least favorite stunt)
DoC: Worst: Everyone. Continuity go down the hole..... Wait, no. Nero was scary. Nero wins best.
VIII: Best: Squall, worst: Rinoa
IX: Best: Kuja, worst: Quina
X: Best: Auron, worst: Rikku
X-2: Best: Shuyin, worst: everyone else, dang it
XII: Best: Balthier, worst: Penelo and Vaan

Out of all of them, I'd say Squall's the best main hero, Rufus owns everyone.

Zidane: He was a funny guy, he was proposed straight and believeable, and he acted as a nice mentor to Vivi and Garnet to a certain extent. The only thing I didn't like about him was when he found out he was supposed to kill everybody. He lived his life and didn't do that, why get pissed off when he found out later?

Vaan: He wasn't some anime superhero who was afraid of women. He was a normal guy. He was a well known kid in his city whose brother happened to be the key witness in the death of the king. He was also believeable straight (no offense). Even though he never kissed Penelo, you'd have to be pretty stupid to see them as not together.

I don't really see why people say he didn't have character developement. All that really means is a change in personality. You can argue this, but you had to notice him growing as a person. He went from a stupid and disrespectful kid who acted on impulse, to a mature individual who thinks about what he does before he acts. He realized that there were things in the world that were beyond his control. This is called humility. I thought he was one of the most well thought out characters I've ever seen.

What a lot of people are saying is that he lacked a backstory. If you've played as many Matsuno games as I have, you would know that many but a few key characters have long, shifting backstories. In the immortal words of X-Play...

Final Fantasy XII was about important stuff, and not whiny emo crap.

Squall: Squall was a dork. He was a short, fat, and nerdy kid who was upset that his baby-sitter left. He grew up into to some wierd even dorkier dude. I just cannot see this guy as a hero. He wasn't even an anti-hero either. Would you really want a kid to look up to him?

If this is open to all characters, Vivi was awesome. Ramza was okay, but all he really did was follow his dying father's advice and protect his friends (which was cool). He wasn't really trying to take down the church or anything. If I had to pick one from 6, Celes was amazing. If I had to pick one from 7, Barret Wallace was cool. Steiner was cool too.

Also FF9 had the best ending.

I like the main heroes. They fit their story. Like Cloud did an awesome part in FF7, he was exacly what he should be, and FF7 wouldn't be the same without his being that way. Same for Squall. Cold hearted guy fall for a girl. What's the problem...See, I focus on having fun and trying to appreciate the work that's been done. I do not focus on making shallow hypercritic. Brings me nothing good.

Of course, some characters such as Caith Sigh were kinda lame, but the played a part in a story, story would make no such sense without them.

As for character design, I'd say Squall is the coolest, first cause Gunblade looks marvelous, second cause his clothes are awesome too.

I didn't like Tidus' design. His clothes were ugly, and his limit breaks too. He had the best sword swinging animation though.

Not main characters: Balthier and Auron were awesome. Balthier wins cause of his voice and he used a gun as weapon.

Caith Sigh wasn't a happy thing to put in a game too...he was way too big and white, I didn't understand it well cause the SD graphics didn't make it a clear thing. And he was pretty useless, bad stats, bad limits.

Heck Vaan and Balthier could make just as nice couple as Vaan, Ashe... They flirt just as much with eachother...
Same with Balthier and Ashe, Lamont and Vaan, Basch and Reddas... God I hate FFXII, great gameplay and graphic, but nothing else...

Vaan gets into the castle because he doesn´t like the empire, involves going to eastersands and giza plains for reasons more logical in a MMORPG...
Vaan finds stone, sky pirates want it, guards come, they all run, Vaine blows his own palace to pieces...
They escape through the sewers and find a gal chased by imperials, she doesn´t give her real name...
You get captured at the end of the sewers, she is taken to Vaine, Balthier give his hankerchief to Penello so that Bagannom captures her. You escape from the dungeons and find Basch, Vaan hates him and Basch tell them about his twin brother who actually killed the king... You get out of there and everyone is like "bye guys, going on with our own lifes" you drag the others along to find Penello in Bhujerba. You get followed by this little girl/boy calling himself Lamont, he follows you into teh cave where you fight bagannon and then out again only to see him leave with the imperials and Penello...
Back at the town you have run around like an idiot shouting "I´m captain Basch von Ronsenberg!" for a while. You get send up to the levithan and finds Ashe and escapes, finds Lamont and Penello on the way out, fight with a random judge...
Back on the ground Ashe gets everyone to go on an adventure to the westersands(nam-yensa) to find a lost treasure. you find it, an Esper and a Magicite... You leave and get picked up on a ship again, you fight a betrayer and everything explodes when the judge tries to use the magicte.
Then suddently everyone decides to go to the Ozmone plains to a small village of jahara just to hear the elder say "we are to stupid to use the magicite we gave it to your great grandfather" but lucky you! Lamont is there to and asks you to follow him to a friend. You go to the Viara village because the forrest is sealed, you go to a cave to fight a viera that is possesed by the magicte, goes back to the village and grant acces. You go to the place and talk with the guy, you find out about a sword that can cut magicite so you go and find it, once you have it and leave, the entire mountain is under attack by the archadies empire... Hey guess what? another random judge battle. He was possesed to and... nothing else really.
Lamont was taken back to archadies and you are going there to to infiltrate the draklor laberatory, their study of magicite under supervisor of Dr Cid...
Just blabla, help some moogles with a bridge, running through half of the world map and like only one scene on the way with Ashe and Balthier talking about power and resposebility...
As you arrive one of Balthiers old friends screw you over as you enter the city, you have to run around and play "Match the people" in teh city to get enough "chops" to enter the higher city only to be send down again... So you enter and finds out cid is under control by an old god who created the magicite... And some random black guy with two biggass swords becomes friend wit you, he talk about the things Dr.Cid said(that Ashe must use the Sword to vut herself a pice of the magicte and use it in the war against Archadies) and he goes to a place while you head to a place tipped by Dr Cid himself, you get to the bottom and Ashe is facing judgement from the gods as they tell her to use the magicite to purge everything taht has prospered for far to long. She refuses and thinks taht destroying it is better.
You go to the cataract after finding out that Redass got his *** kicked there and you take him with you. At the top you find Basch twin brother and faces him, he was send only to see wether or not you was a treath to the empire so DR Cid gets mad and kicks him out of duty of the empire(wich is Vaine at the moment btw) so you fight Dr cid as well, then he summons Famfrit, and you kill them both... He summons Bahamuth (an airship... kinda, the magicites name is bahamut) and Vaan and Ashe is trying to destroy it , but Redass sacrefice himself instead...
Then you go to the Bahamut, fights Basch twin, tells him that he should aid Larsa(lamont) and that he should think for himself and all that crap, you fight vaine, then vaine, and then vaine with bahamuth powers and then the game is over...

And um, well nothing happens, nothing of importance happens, sure Square says "this will be more focused on politic and ruling and not some cheesy love story" but hell i rather have a cheesy love story than this... Gah...
