I never thought this would happen...
« on: November 01, 2007, 06:14:41 PM »
For the past couple of days, I've looked through gaming magazines...and...nothing's caught my attention.

Lair, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Final Fantasy: Revenant Wings...they just don't catch my eye as much as games like Riviera: The Promised Land or Persona 3 did when I first heard about them. The majority of the games I'm interested in are old ones that I haven't played: Radiata Stories, Growlanser Generations, Xenosaga 1 and 3 (no 2--never 2), SRT: Original Generation....

...am I just getting old?

If this helps, there's a Riviera remake on the PSP. You also might be interested in Cry On for the 360.

Aye, me too. I'm really not that bothered about playing games. I just wanna get out there and make them professionally.

It says something when I actually prefer watching my brothers play videogames to playing them myself... Having said that I've been playing the GBA fire emblem through again on hard. Now there's a game worthy of my free time.

It's not just you or getting old or anything. Those games just really do look crappy.

Also, Radiata Stories isn't very good, I regret buying it when it came out. (Very Shallow Battle system, decent character system, poor story and music is BLEH.)

Don't feel bad, I very seldom buy games lately, The only ones that have be jumping for joy that I don't already have are Galaxy, Brawl and the New Animal Crossing, beyond that, I could **** more entertaining sounding games.

Also Cliffs of Dover.

Revenant Wings, Guitar Hero 3, Rock Band, Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Blue Dragon, Soul Calibur Legends (Lloyd Irving as a playable character!), GTA 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, etc etc.

There's plenty to be happy about. :P

Well, I'd have to get a 360 for that, first....and cash is short.

Another thing that annoys me: too many f***ing FPS's.

Still, thanks for your support. I'm sure that once Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo get over their "We must get a head start on the Console War NAO!!" phase, great and amusing J-RPGs and cult hits will come and drive my weaboo senses into a anime-fueled fury.

Until then, P3 for the win. ^_^

I just think that some game genres are going way down in quality. Like I kept trying to play through FF12, but I couldn't ever do it... I haven't really seen an rpg that I could actually play through anymore. The older ones just are way better. Even with action rpg games like oblivion, I think it's earlier game (morrowind) was a lot better.

Besides rpgs though, I think games are getting better. FPS games now are just unbelievable. Grand Turismo 5 looks sweet, when I was looking at the screenshots, I couldn't tell if it was a game or not... Twilight Princess was also a great game (for a legend of zelda game). So while rpgs are dying out, other games are taking thier place. So if your an rpg fan, you're a dying bread.

...I cannot think of a single complaint I have ever had about Oblivion that didn't have a mod that fixed it.

To Dragonblaze, you're forgetting about Mistwalker. All of the guys who did the Square RPGs of the late nineties are now with that company. Hell almost all of the FF7 team is working on Lost Odyssey. Since Mistwalker is a design company who can pay others to code, it's guaranteed to put out a ****load of good RPGs.

Don't get me wrong here, I think Oblvion is a good game, I've been playing it a lot recently actually. I just think that its predicesor morrowind was better, and a lot of people I talked to thought that. First off, Morrowind was huge, it was bigger and it didn't have any boundries (except natural ones like the ocean). The characters also had a lot more "parts". Like in morrowind, you could customize your armor to have diffearnt shoulder plates, and there was a neck slot that oblivion took out, the neck slot was cool for things like masks, glasses, ect, and it worked good for custom races with wings. You could also wear robes and such over armor in morrowind. Oblvion also took out 'levitation' and as far as I know, it can't be modded well into Oblvion due to the enemy AI pathfinding system. The rest of the stuff in oblvion that I dont like can be modded. I think Oblvion is a sweet game, but I thought its earlier version was a lot better...

I haven't really heard of Mistwalker at all, I'll have to take a look at it.

I don't claim to be an expert at games or anything, but it just seems to me that the rpg genre of games just isn't what it used to be, while other genres are getting better by the looks of it. Graphics may be a part of it, but I don't think companies are neglecting the stories for the graphics. Better graphics means more time working on the graphics, which in turn leads to a higher percent of the budget going to graphics. Also, I think 'crapier' graphics allows for a better feel to the story/game itself. Really, if you think about it, some lines that sound perfectly fine reading in a game sound completely corny when said out loud, even with a good voice actor. Also the poses of crapier graphics can't be mimicced with better graphics. Take an old 2d character where the character's eyes pop out of their heads and their arms flail in the air. That pose seems perfectly fine in these games, but with better graphics, its hard to really get the same feel. Even in final fantasy 7, 8, and 9 before the 'facial expressions' came out, a pose like clouds 'shoulder shrug' had a lot more feel than a 'good graphic' character with the same pose.

Personally, I think that the older graphics/stlye make the game better just by their natural feel.
