Tonight on Charas Nightly: What is Spam?
« Reply #15 on: August 10, 2008, 06:48:05 PM »
Im not expecting anyone to really agree with me.

Thats one of the reasons I left this forum.  TAKING YOURSELF TO SSEEERRRIIOOOUUSSLLLYYY.
Contrary to popular belief, charas is not SRS BIZNESS.

And you're right, it is pretty much the way you dudes have always done things, but thats the problem.  The way you've ALWAYS done things is being the STRICT HOW-DARE-YOU-DEFY-ME mod attitude.  Then, taking that attitude to topic shifts and every other aspect of the forum.

And if drace just posts "lol", then wtf.  Why is he not banned.  Thats dumb.  See you're taking what I said and switching it around to what you want to hear.  I dont support stupid one-liner messages that can be applied to EVERY TOPIC EVER.  I dont like random off-topic bullshit being posted.  I support CONVERSATION, AND THE EVOLUTION OF SAID CONVERSATION AS IT PROGRESSES.  But this off topic bullshit is to the point it cant progress without being yelled at to take it to pms, which is total bullshit.  If I wanted to talk to one guy back and forth I wouldnt be posting on a forum, and making a new thread for the ****?  What for?  Its nothing but a side thought that was SPARKED from the original topic.  It doesnt call for its own topic.  Its like if you're talking to some people about something, and you have a side thought you want to express, why the **** would you go to a new group of people to express that thought.

Edit: I bet you guys will end up locking this thread too.

Well, what if somebody comes into a thread and expects something different? So, if somebody came in here to say 'good luck' to Lucas, or perhaps give him tips to pass the time, or... I dunno, welcome him back when he finally does, BOY OH BOY will they ever be surprised to notice that the big hot topic in the 'LUCAS IS GROUNDED' thread, is actually a deep philosophical conversation about what spam is and whatnot.

I mean, really, Rev, in normal forum conversations, it's REALLY hard to get off topic. Let's take a thread about a showcase of Sega news for example. There's a pretty clear area in which the conversation is still on topic, that could probably go as far as even, say, talking about how terrible the new Sonic game ended up being, which actually might be considered off-topic by some mods, but hey, that's flexibility.

Granted, here we have a 'Leaving' thread about someone getting grounded... Uh, I really don't think what we got here is on topic. I gave y'all a warning, and you didn't heed it, because you clearly haven't taken this battle elsewhere. Tell you what, I'll split the topic into two, so that you can continue to discuss this issue of what's spam, and the poor performance of the new mods since they are too hard on all of us, while meanwhile, this poor old thread will be left alone and can wait dormant until Lucas reports that he's no longer grounded.

In forum conversations its easy as hell to get off topic, by just talking.  One person has a big response.  Another responds to one part of his response, and bam, topic shift eventually occurs.  But its no biggie is what Im saying.

And I dont think mods do a poor job.  Not at all.  I just ask the question....WHY SO SERIOUS.  srsly guys.  srsly.

I dont even know who the new mods are, these are just observations of the 3 DAYS I been back on here.

also, I cant tell if zkx is being SRS or NOTSOSRS.
But I believe in him, and you should all vote for him if he runs for mayor.  Dunno when that happens, but do it.

Good example here.

NOT AN OFF TOPIC POST.  RELATED TO ONE OF MY RESPONSES, WHICH INSPIRED HIM TO RESPOND TO THAT PART OF MY RESPONSE.  SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING?

I havent voted since that fat black guy won american idol.
I could tell my voice wasnt accounted for :(

Also, to touch on the "Well, what if somebody comes into a thread and expects something different? So, if somebody came in here to say 'good luck' to Lucas, or perhaps give him tips to pass the time, or... I dunno, welcome him back when he finally does, BOY OH BOY will they ever be surprised to notice that the big hot topic in the 'LUCAS IS GROUNDED' thread, is actually a deep philosophical conversation about what spam is and whatnot,"  SO WHAT?  Post what you have to say about Lucas.  At its core, the thread is still just a topic about lucas being grounded, its just that it has sprouted various other subjects, all indirectly related.  If he wants to join in on the debate, COOLIO, but if hes just wishin lucas well, thats fine too.

Topics evolve and change.  You dont talk about one thing for an entire conversation do you?
...
This forums idea of spam is retarded.
Im pretty sure this falls under OFF TOPIC to you people too.
Also, you lock way too many threads.

*pops in for no apparent reason*

Back over two years ago, there was a lot of hubub about Carmen and GC locking threads and editing posts and not letting people go off topic. Eventually Robotam forced the issue to go public and everyone voiced opinions on how crappy that was, and I made some administrative changes to allow threads to go off topic and stop the mass-locking of threads. There was lots of wacky drama, but in the end everyone seemed pretty pleased by the changes.

I even dug the topic up for you: http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=15936.0

Rev's right. He was right back then and he's right now. If you guys don't want to take that to heart, you're the mods, what do I care. I'm just sayin', no, the way you do things is NOT always how they've been done.

Edit: also, needs more Peorth

I think it really depends on the situation. Like, for example, major threads like "Post a picture". . . it's just posting a picture and talking about said picture. However, in other threads, the conversation definitely goes down other directions and does not necessarily need to come back to its roots.
What I consider spam is the "lol" type crap that doesn't contribute much of anything. I don't think that can be regulated without mods turning into post nazis, though. That would be lame. OMG YOU SAID LOL BAN!!!! I mean, really, it's an internet forum, yes, so there's going to be some idiocy. However, in order to make this a semi-productive place (gasp! charas? productive?), users should also have the decency to not just lol at every freaking thing.
Also, I don't really care what you male folk think the fun is behind accusing each other of having mismatched genitalia, but "U HAS A VAGINA" wasn't effective or mature in middle school and probably isn't now, either.

Spam happens alot..some people like me don't even realize that they're spamming...And If a moderator edits your post P.M. Him or something. Don't try to get all of charas to get mad at them.
