Another forum I'm on went over its bandwidth and needed to nuked. 

But then again, their unmoderated section was completely full, not to mention the shload of 2mb files directly uploaded to posts.

It seems like this has happened before. Apparently a post count or amount of topics reaches a certain number or some crap and the main page breaks.

I go to my messages from the front page, and navigate by an unweildy combination of my last posts, and unread topics.

EDIT: Note for those interested - uploading an avatar is also being a bit iffy. I was finally able to get my fsjal back up. The error comes up, but it still worked.

It does sound like either a memory issue, or a space issue.

Yup, something similar.  It'll save the avatar AFTER getting the error message.
