I think it was pretty much original. A plumber who travels the world via pipes to save a Princess kidnapped by a turtle-dragon thing and his army of turtle and corrupted Mushrooms, and can use Flowers to throw fire ball, Mushroom to become taller and Stars to be invincible for some time.

Mario Bros. is completely different to Super Mario Bros.
I guess you can say it's a retelling of the old 'save the princess from the dragon' fairytales, but I wouldn't say it's a ripoff.

Quite simply, SEGA will never get it right. Take whatever little victories you can, and run with them.

Yes they are going to be released as "episodes", but they should all be full games. Think of it as like the release of Sonic and Knuckles. That game was a continuation of Sonic 3 but still had a standard amount of zones to play.
