I'm currently getting my *** handed to me in the game. There's kind of a sharp jump in difficulty around Jasmine's gym. The gym after also put up a respectable fight and my rival almost completely destroyed me.

At least Golem can learn all punches. Golem with Fire punch is a great help with the new GEN IV damage system, you could just as well give him fire blast earlier but this time Fire punch is affected by your Attk so it can give quite the punch.
Very useful in D/P/P with all those fruggin Bronzomgs.

I'm sorry but with the exception of Rhyperior with that one ability, Rock/Ground type Pokes just have way too many weaknesses to exploit. Don't listen to me though, I'm more of a Baton Pass/Substitute spammer.

That just means you're stuck with that Pokemon. As every opponent and their grandma has Earthquake in their arsenal.

1/2 of the D/P elite four had Earthquake, it was so silly.
Kinda like how E4 Rapidash have solarbeam in platinum.

And I hate Bronzomg for the reason mentioned above me.
Levitate.
It's steel/physic so it's only two weaknesses are ground and fire.
Resistant to normal,flying, rock, steel, grass, ice, psychic and dragon.
Immunity poison.
BUT it might have the ability Levitate so it goes down to 1 weakness. Fire.
And the problem here is that Bronzomg can learn Earthquake himself so whenever you try to solve the problem with a fire poké he'll shake your world.

I've found two solutions to this problem though. Both are risky.
1. Golem with Fire punch. Golem's defense allows him to survive an earthquake luckily.
2. Crobat with Heat Wave. Amazing speed is amazing. Downsides: A. Heat Wave is a SP attk. B. Bronzomg is psychic and obviously knows Psychic which is Super effective.

So, what, is Earthquake actually that good?
It's been a long, long while since I've actually played any Pokémon game long enough to even remember what Earthquake used to do for damage.

The damage is enough to kill pretty much everything weak to earth.
This includes:
Ice
Rock
Steel
Fire
Electric(the only weakness)
Poison

Unfortunately for some, this proves to work twice. Like that poor thing Aggron with Rock Steel.

The thing is: EQ is Atk, and most pokes that can learn EQ are Pokes with weight(including Miltank) so they generally have that overwhelming attk.
In D/P/P your Infernape would die from anything Earthquake-based. Even if it was a NON-ground type(NO STAB bonus). The damage is good, I've never seen it miss. It hits two targets.
And having played Colosseum and XD:gale of darkness on the gamecube I've had my fair deal with EQ for too long.
Teaming up birds with earthquake and levitators with EQ is NOT cool!

Prpl_Mage is definitely right. Earthquake is completely badass. Base 100 damage and base 100% accurate makes it one of the strongest, most reliable and deadly moves in the game. I had to basically abandon half my team when I took on the Elite Four in Platinum because anything vulnerable to earth would be instantly one-shotted by anything it tried to fight against.

EDIT: But yeah EQ is beast. As a bonus it also has 10PP compared to those 120base elemental (Blizzard etc..) moves .
I remember when Hyper Beam used to be THE move back in R/B/Y. Almost every kid had it on there Charizard lol.

Earthquake is the entire reason the development team started tacking the ability Levitate onto every Pokemon in existence.
