No, the Mayans said the current calendar cycle would end and a new one would begin. A lot of people can't grasp that not everyone's calendar is linear like the Gregorian one.

My new year celebrations consisted of having drinks with friends then punching one of them in the face because I slept with his girlfriend. Probably sets the tone for the coming year.

So my dad didn't buy fireworks. My mom had some hidden away (not many). There were no lighters anywhere in the house. My dad was drunk and quick to blame everyone, and the timing involved was basically "hey, we have five minutes, so let's try and get it started!", so that didn't help any. Kind of a clusterfuck and now everyone's a little pissed.
