Steam Summer sale
« on: June 11, 2014, 09:47:19 AM »
I just can't remember when this thing usually starts...

Anyway, I'm setting my hopes on getting all the remaining DLC for borderlands 2, the angry video game nerd game, maybe the latest stand alone expansion for Heroes of might and magic 6, haven't played it since the release 3 years ago and some other stuff. Maybe warhammer 2(or 3? can't remember) I liked the first game that was like company of heroes at least.

And although I doubt that early access games go on sale I'd like to give starbound and edge of space a try. Haven't decided it magicite looks good yet though, being permanent death and all.

Oh right, the purpose of the thread. I've noticed how all of you guys who are on my friend list are boasting a hefty 50-100+ games, so I'm guessing that I'm just the steam newb. But what games should I be on the lookout for when the sale begins?

My guess is that it starts very soon. Take a look at your badges page and you'll see what I mean...

Usually starts early July if I remember correctly. Either way soon, though I can't say I'm really excited for it. Probably since I've bought so many games over the year that I'm still only 50% on my backlog. If I really want a game I would've bought it already, I usually save the Steam sales for the "might be fun" games and the backlog is so crowded it tells me "eh, play that one first".

I got a ton of stuff last summer, but very little over Christmas, and most of that was gifts for friends. Honestly there's not a lot of new stuff out right now that I want to pick up.

If you guys are anything like me, you burned through your wishlists during the early days of seasonal sales. You've probably learned your lesson about lesser titles, and you're back to buying at a somewhat reasonable rate. Steam sales don't have quite as much to offer you these days, aren't quite as outrageous as they once were, so they won't be as brutal as the early days.

Still though, those damn sales are nuts.

Steam doesn't have much in the line of good rpgs imo, so I don't do much with it.

Transistor was pretty good though. Oh, and Child of Light.

There are some good ones, but yeah. PC is more of a shooter platform. The good RPGs are few and far between.

Anyone know a game one steam that is kind of a mix of city building and rpg without the whole conquer all other settlements thing? Like an RTS only more about building and defending your settlement than about taking out the other npcs.
Folk Tale or something seems like it, but I'm not one for early access stuff.

I think there was this game Banished, looked more like a building a working city simulator than your typical age of empires.

This exactly. I got burned pretty hard on early access stuff, picking up nearly a dozen "games" (and I use this term generously) that even a year later are little more than impressive tech demoes with no actual meat.

These days I mostly buy games based on word of mouth. I'll even pick up an early access if my friends insist it has enough content. Steam reviews are also semi-decent indicators of how finished stuff is, especially if I'm suspicious and turn on only the negative reviews, as the negative ones usually go more in depth as to what the real problems are.

However, I've found that some of the negative reviews are written by people who are... weird. Staring off saying "don't buy this game, the devs are ripping you off!" but then going on and saying good things about the game. Or stuff like that.

The first early access game I got was this 7 days to die my brother wanted to play with someone. It's like minecraft but half life graphics and set in a zombie infested world where the zombies run and act more aggressive at night. Anyway, the game got some obvious flaws like there's only iron armour to craft and 1 type of each tool (pickaxe, shovels etc) that could be improved. Also, the world isn't random generated (yet) and little things like that. Also, there's no real end to the game, you just keep doing what you're doing. And although there isn't a lot to do you can still tweak most settings (zombie spawn rate, the loot percentage, how many minutes a day lasts and so on). Oh right my point... Right, the game is good, but it's in alpha so there's still a lot of work to be done. And there's no guarantee that the game will be finished any time soon, as with all early access games. So I stay away from it.

Found this on gbatemp.com, supposedly this confirms the summer sale dates?

So the sale is on. I got the heroes 6 expansion, also mirrors edge, and EYE also risk of rain. I hoped that Warhammer 40k (2) would drop lower (although 10€ isn't much, I have no doubt that it's worth more than that).

Checking back from time to time to see some great deals, unfortunately my cash flow kinda stopped here so I need to restrain myself a little. Therefore I decided against getting all them early access games.

Also, Terraria is like €1.9 at the moment. So for all of you who haven't gotten it yet, git it.

I bought some DLC for a few games. I also got Payday 2 (paid for with the profits of selling roughly 5 pages of Steam trading cards).
