I think you it should support GIFs as pics.
This would make animated stuff really easy.

I dunno how supportive C++ is with animated gifs, but I do know that VB .NET is the only VB that supports those. But yeah, if you could find a way to make it track when an animation begins and finishes than that would rawk.

C++ is pretty flexible with image formats as far as I can tell, and even if I can't use GIFs directly, there's always a workaround.

Perhaps an inbuilt drawing tool?

That's unnecessary, considering the amount of good free software to serve that purpose out there (far better than anything I could make in that respect).

Animated Monsters
The 8 Direction thing is good.. the keys should be in the Keypad tho..
taller characters.. maybe 80 pixels tall and about 25-30 pixels wide..
also, i know it'll be pretty hard, but Giant charsets would be cool.. you know, for ABSs' and probably CBSs'.. you know.. for dragons and stuff.. :D
also a Message layout thingy. that way you can choose your message layouts too. like a message layout from suikoden? chrono cross?
Menu System Layout. change looks from FF-style to Suikoden Style and to a few more layouts.. :D

when this sem's over, i'll help you design the layouts if you want. that is, if you choose to do those.

i think the database editor would be too hard.. unless you put in the equations yourself.. so let's say the stats of SEER were like RM2k. you put in a stat called "M-Def" and "Skill". you need equations for that.. mine are M-Def=Mag+Def/2 and Skill=Atk+Mag+Spd/3. there are more options there like Luck, Critical,Dodge.. etc.. making equations are easy. but putting them into a DBS would be hard. get what i mean? tho if it was there, that'd be sweet..

Also string variables (variables with text instaed of numbers as value) could be useful.

- The character heights will suit whichever screen resolutions I decide to stick to.
- There will be separate parts for larger graphics, not sure which form they will come in yet.
- Different message layouts are a certainty.
- Different menu system layouts are a certainty.
- Changing battle algorithm equations is a certainty.
- String variables are a certainty.

I don't think GIF would be an option, simply because you will need to pay for GIF support. Yes, Microsoft is being bitchy.

One question, the music formats, which one are in? I know there are WAVE, MP3, and MIDI, but there are also OGG Vorbis and tracker music (MOD, XM, etc.). Maybe someone is willing to create their own tracker music type as well (so you won't be saddled up with it).

I'm having a look into music formats at the moment, so I'll see which ones I think are viable.  And I never knew about having to pay for GIF support o.O that's a new one on me, I'll have to investigate (it may be that I'm behind the times because of my absence).

Buttons:
D-pad(8)
Action
Cancel
Menu
Run

would that be hard to do?

and also, i disagree by the pixel by pixel movement thingy.. lol.. 8 pixels each step if the character was walking and 16 pixels if running?

- I'm including full keyboard support, so the buttons are totally customiseable (spelling?  not sure :()
- Pixel-by-pixel movement and tile-based movement are both possible.

- No screenshots yet, haven't decided on a final GUI design.
- I'm not going to include a RAR opener, considering WinRAR is free and will do a better job.
- There is no scope for 3D models.  I will, however, include support for various movie formats in case you want 3D cutscenes.
