Guitars
« on: October 31, 2005, 08:46:22 PM »
I have some money and have decided I want a new guitar. I'm a rythm guitarrist, but do some lead too so I need a kinda all round guitar, plus it can't be too expensive. What do you recommend?

Well I would help you if I could, but I'm very new to that area. PM Asakura or Carmen, they seem to know what they're talking about.

My first guitar was an Ibanez GRG170DX.
It's awesomeness at it's best.
It cost me... $230 CDN

And Ibanez is probably your best bet for learning. Don't get a squire, no matter what you hear. Ibanez's shittiest guitar is better than the best squire around. Also, dont get a BC Rich Warlock, and if you feel like you must for some reason, don't get the starter set, I've heard bad things about it. And down the line, make sure you never use the Zakk Wylde strings.. they have a high tendancy to break.

well 90% of BC rich guitars suck.  If you find the right one, they compete with any gibson/fender. I personally own an 12 string Ovation and a BC rich Bich. In order to get a good BC rich you'll need some good cash. I don't suggest getting any new ones.  If you have NEVER played guitar, get an acoustic, cheap guitar, that'll take alota damage and mistakes. That way, when you're ready to move to that step to sound better, you have the money and the know how to do so. Get a free one if you can.

BUT if you have played and just wanna go electric, I strongly suggest The BC rich  Bich, Mockingbird, and the Seagull.

I also suggest schecters and ibanez.

DO NOT get a gibson/epiphone
DO NOT get a fender.
they will rob you with their "laminated maple" a.k.a plywood.

plywood=bad...it doesn't age like real wood, and it doesn't sound nearly as good, its shitty basically.

what it comes down to is what you're most comfortable with.

I have the best practice amp ever. The 30w VOX with valvetronix technology. It's loaded with pre-effects that are awesome to practice with. iT's not an amp you want to go over drums, but it's nice. The thing about it is it will have the quality of a turned up amp, but it can be low. Vox, trust me, it's cheaper then the marshall, and loaded with pre-effects to mess with and edit. Or you can bypass them all and just have a solid amp

it's great for a guitarist who wants practice, but wants tons of variety.

EDIT: If you can't afford any of this, (i dunno how much you have saved) go for a cheap ibanez and 15w line 6 amp. Thats a few hundred cheaper then what I had for you.

As for strings, Go for ELixir, which are coated and have long lasting tone, or martin.

ooooooooooh Carmen niice amp. Hey just an wierdo question but do you guys have "Compressor" on when you play. I use that sound to get the real rocky sound. And "delay" aswell so the sound makes that special echo.

My first amp was a Peavey 10w.. bought it for 10 bucks from a friend.

Tell you what, get a Vai Signature JEM7V, a Krank amp (no less than 100w), Dimebag Wah, and definatly some reverb and delay pedals. That's my wishlist anyways...

I'm sorry carmen, but as a fellow musician I am forced to disagree with you. I have heard Bich's and from my point of view, they do not stand up to the sound of a Gibson Les Paul.

In my opinion, Gibson Les Pauls are fantastic sounding guitars for both lead and rhythm. If you don't do a lot of lead, then a Fender Strat is your next best bet. These two guitars are also known for easy playability, as opposed to BC Rich's, where the weird body shape can make soloing somewhat difficult.

Also, if you like the look of Gibson / Fenders, make sure to get the real models. Do NOT get epiphone or Squier. They are horrible guitars, only made for beginners.

(this is the opinion of a bassist/guitarist)

For those who asked, I already play the electric and have done for a while on a Wilson. I just know shockingly little about buying them and wanted another one. And I've played the acoustic for years.

Cheers for the advice.
