Wondering if I could get some advice as to what needs to be done to this screen. I was going for the sort of "ancient ruined fortress", using one of Meis' chips. I like it, but it just seems to be missing something to make it look more fortress-ish.

The ballistae are mine. ^_^

Also, those events on the trees are layering, in case you were wondering.

Hey, that's pretty nifty. maybe add a shadow affect under the fortress, it looks kinda odd all bright and stuff where the fortress looks like it goes over the ground. The big open space in the front is kinda odd too, needs something, not sure what. But so far, definitely looks great.

Well, I got an experiment of my own. Just a chipset compilation. I'm gonna be experimenting with water events later and stuff, but for now, I'm just trying to get things that match.

Dragonium: To be honest, I've never liked that chipset. (srry meiscl...) The grass is too bright, the castle looks a little too muddy, and the Mack and Blue trees to the side with the color loss kindof hurt my eyes. I think that if everything in the screanshot came from Rudra's Treasure unedited, it would look better. I might do something like that later.

BTW, I love the ballistae. It might make a little more sense to put them over every entrance though.

I was coding my game, and I made another concept screen. You like?

I know the map behind it is a little plain. My game plays sortof like an abs and I want to keep it open. I've got a ways to go, but I want my game to look exactly as above.

Just now noticed Dren. The cliffs actually look nice. I'd just change the log to Theodore's log instead of a Mac & Blue one.

Thanks man, I tried adjusting the color of the log. I think it's better but I'm not sure. Do you have a link to mroe of theodore's work/rips? I found a lot of it at Phylomortis, but I didn't run across any logs in this style. I could've missed it.

Oh, and about your map. It's cool and all, the colors blend well and look nice, but I don't see how your ABS is going to work.

Heh, thanks. I would add some kind of shadow (Makes a lot of sense now you mention it), but of course iDraw doesn't work on Vista, and MS Paint severely restricts my spriting abilities. :|

That big open space is there since throughout the game there'll be various events taking place there outside the fortress, and there'd be too little space otherwise. I should've said.

But anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Dren, that set is awesome. I love those trees. I agree with aboutso though, that log looks like it doesn't match. Good so far though. :D

EDIT: Log is much better.

I've been wanting to do some serious recolour on the set actual. With no offence to Meis, the grass is just the wrong colour and it doesn't match the castle. I like the brown "muddiness" for the castle though, since it gives the "ruined" feel I'm after. But of course, I can't do what I want at the moment, since recolouring a an entire chipset in MS Paint is like redecorating the Sistine Chapel with a kid's painting set.

The ballistae were over every entrance, but:

a) It was a bit too much, if you get my meaning. Too cramped.

b) I was going to put some other things over the other entrances, namely a ladder in the centre and maybe something else.

Glad you like the ballistae though. :D

By the way, as to your screen, I like it. If you have lots of action going on you don't want the background to be too distracting, so simple means better. I fugging love that dragon by the way, although the bright red looks a little out-of-place. Just a personal opinion though.

I colored it to the way that would suit the plot in my game. You're welcome to recolor it however you see fit.

Abyss screens
« Reply #1342 on: June 13, 2007, 01:14:04 AM »
A few screens from Abyss, my game.

My title screen. Lettering's drawn in Coreldraw, but....

A bit of the beginning story.

A guy who's about to die says his last words....

Told ya....

This guy needs a new face.

It looks like an RTP chipset, but it's not. I made it myself (kinda) in coreldraw!

So, yeah, advice 'n stuff.

Dren: The new log and taller grasses from that last screen work really well. Keep those.

Roland_Deschain: You're screenshots are pretty distorted, and I don't feel like going through the effort of clicking on them and opening the link in a different window just to look at them properly. However, I can tell already that your map is FAR to open.

Before I posted all my chipsets, I was working on one final chipset that didn't have an example yet.

Here's what I've got of an example so far.

Nothing amazing here, This is Heaven's Tower in the later chapters where you play an alternate character, Leon, with his baby wyvern companion! (Yes the dragon follows from map to map.)

Edit: here's another.

This one is a puzzle, You have a limited time to touch the proper orbs by the colors the energy beams generate randomly.

Meis: It's gorgeous. I'm not a fan of the floors and how the gray goes into that bright yellow, but the colors overall work together. I like how the background is really only 3 colors: gray, brown, and green. They make the water, the flowers, and the sprite stand out. I just wouldn't add any more detail to it. The pipes already sell this map.

Dele: The first screen looks boring, but you've given me a chipset idea with the second screenshot.

Very nice Drenrin I like it, the houses might need a little more detail though, it looks like you're going for a broken down old house kinda look, maybe adding some broken windows for falling off awnings or something like that would help make them look better.

aboutasoandthis: Uhh, thank you I guess. =P The first screenshot the statues, when the switches are turned off the eyes are gone, when the switches are turned on the eyes light up. Other than that I couldn't think of too much detail for the map, the chipset I was using had little to work with as far as floor details go, but had alot of wall details so I tried to compensate by adding alot of statues candles and other figures and tiles onto the walls. I could probably add some more detail if I wanted to, but the tower itself is quite large (test playing it from the bottom to the top took me 3 hours once everything was created and completed glitch-free and whatnot) so it's hard to think of many unique ideas for each room or area of the tower. I tried to fill it with as many puzzles and things you can do on the side as I could think of to add length to the time spent in the zone. Worked pretty good actually.

If you have some suggestions as to how I could make it look a little better I'd gladly take some advice though. If you're willing to help I can post some other spots in that area that could use some work.

Edit: here's some more garbage screenshots of my game, don't expect much.

Murder?!

I really hate this map and everything about this area. I didn't want to use this chipset but it matched what I needed to get done.
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/977/luminuscs5dq3.png

This town is a little bit better done, but it's still nothing compared to the stuff you guys make.

(Inside the pub shown in the screenshot above) different bands play in this pub as you progress in the game.

Flashback scene of the final boss in my game and several key characters from the storyline. (Sorry I couldn't get the entire boss's face in the screenshot)
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/9572/luminuscs4kx3.png

Faceoff with the final boss for the first time in his lesser form. Tillian wants to make a stand here and protect the main character with his life.
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3650/luminuscs1mz3.png

*Spoiler*
Supposed to be a serious cutscene where Naito falls from the top of the tower and dies. (Haha, a spoiler for a game that will never see the light of day. =P) It looks better in the game itself, I kinda caught it at a bad spot, the castle side looks more detailed below and above the spot in the screenshot and Naito is actually spinning as he falls lol.

May be bland and unenteresting but I've seen worse. =P

Actually Dele, I think your game looks fantastic. You haven't worried about perfect mapping and as a result you actually look like you've got a fair amount of game made.

It looks like one of my old games.
