The background is created by the tiles around you when the battle starts.  It is a default feature of VX.  I do agree that it's empty though.  Not sure what I'm going to do about that yet.

That looks fun! Although, the holes in the floor look pretty awkward.

Well it's a puzzle game. You can make the holes vanish and reappear by manipulating various elements of the puzzle.
