I saw it (Duh). I thought it was okay.

I think the reason it didn't sell well was because they made the film like Final Fantasy 8, but they tried to use a backstory that was old-school Final Fantasy.

Think about it. The movie was set in a futuristic New York City, yet the plot was about collecting a number of itemw and some kind of "Lifestream" called Gaia. It wouldn't be that interesting unless you've already played the old Final Fantasy games. They also didn't have that many Final Fantasy References. I can remember the Chocobo T-shirt and Sid. That's about it.

I think Square would do better if they used an FFTactics styled plot instead of an FF7 style plot.

I haven't seen the movie in a while though.

The other thing about Spirits Within was though, that the characters weren't exactly like your normal FF characters. I suppose people really wouldn't have been pleased about that. I quite enjoyed the characters though, so meh.

Indeed. Move was awesome, but the problem was that people went in thinking it was gonna be FF, and aside from the title, it was nothing like the stereotypical FF ideas. It's a good stand alone film, but when compared to the FF line it draws from it, and people always had that in their minds. It's like certain people with FFT and FFTA. FFTA is a good stand-alone, but when compared to FFT, it's WTF.

Haa-aa! Someone gets it right! I'm just glad I picked FFTA up with an open mind. I mean, I don't see why it should be like FFT, most other Final Fantasy games have little or nothing to do with each other.

That very much frustrates me when people don't look at the individual games are too busy comparing them to either related series or its genre. I can understand if its a direct sequel, but too often or not a game will come out (lets use RPG) and people will say "Its ****, nothing compared to FF7." Its annoying cos I may love/like the game, and know others who do, but some people don't pick it up and give it a chance. I believe thats why making games these days must be so difficult to design.

FF7. Sucks. Dick. There I said it. Stuff like Legend of Dragoon, Skies of Arcadia and Baten Kaitos blow it away.

I agree, while FF7 may have been a defining point for Square, (it WAS their first 3d game) It just lacked.. a basic plot. The whole time you're just like "I'm gonna find Sephiroth! DUR!" and you're just sitting there going "WTF?! How did I get from a port town to some stupid carnival place (though I must say it did kick ***) in the span of an hour?" There weren't enough good twists in the game. I guess people liked it because of it's catchy tunes. (JENOVA, anyone?) Personally, I think FF6 and Chrono Trigger were Square's best games.. Followed by FF12, FF8, and FF9. At least they had large story arcs, good sub plots, more humor, and were all around more fun.

In conclusion, FF7 was overhyped because it was 3d. Fanboyism just made the hype worse. I wouldn't go so far as to say that FF7 sucks, the story was just.. meh. I mean, why would you destroy the world to become a god? All of the inhabitants would be dead, and you wouldn't have anyone to worship you.

Dood dood, FF8 Shall never be spoken of.

FF7 was cool, I love it
(untill better RPGs came out)
Chrono and Tales of Destiny 2 will forever be my loves
(and Azure dreams)
The only good twist FF7 did have was DEATH TO THE PINK DRESSED ONE!

If you played FF7 when it was new and compared it to the other new rpgs of it's time, hell yeah it kicked ***.

Now they have all these spin offs.
(The only one I care for is the Turks one)

FF7 is still in my book a legend and shall forever be respected along with Chrono Trigger and many other great games.

Dragoon was one of those hidden gems. But i gotta say, ff7 was ahead of it's time. Then we caught up to it. I've seen a lot of great rpgs, but ff7 holds its own special place.(Did that sound gay?)

But yeah, since then, tons of better rpgs have come out.

P.s.: Cloud would own Dart. Evidence: Cloud in Advent Children.

Dragoon came out damn near the same time as FF7. It's better.

I hate when people count AC as proof towards Cloud's skills. You give Dart his own feature length film and put him in beatifully rendered cinematic action packed fight scenes, he'd be just as, if not more kickass. Dart alone could beat Cloud, and that's not counting his Dragoon spirits.
