Style over substance
« on: March 18, 2008, 04:22:28 PM »
From the Cyberpunk 2020 Rulebook:

To achieve the essence of the 2000's, you need to master three concepts:

STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE - It doesn't matter how well you do something, as long as you look good doing it. If you're going to blow it, make sure you look like you planned it that way. Normally, clothes and looks don't matter in an adventure, in this world, having a leather armor jacket and mirrorshades is a serious consideration.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING - It's truth. Think dangerous; be dangerous. Remember, everyone in the 2000's is carrying lots of lethal hardware and high-tech enhancements. They won't be impressed by your new H&K smartgun unless you swagger into the club looking like you know how to use it, and are just itching for an excuse.

LIVE ON THE EDGE - The Edge is that nebulous zone where risk takers and highriders go. On the Edge, you'll risk your cash, your rep, even your life on something as vague as a principle or a big score. As a cyberpunk, you'll want to be the action, start the rebellion, light the fire, join great causes and fight for big issues. Never drive slow when you can drive fast. Throw yourself against danger and take it head on.

I love that passage...in fact, I read the whole rulebook for fun, not just to learn how to play.

The question is: what is YOUR style. Not just dressing, but also acting in general. You may say you're a natural, but who would you be trying to fool, eh? All of us act in a way that is our natural way, but many things are though before done. And even the natural way of acting and dressing has elemetns to be described. So, there were posts about favourite game, favourite music style...But what about style over substance?

The template:

Dressing:
Humor:
Social life:
Politics?:
You addition:
Class:

Meself:

Dressing: Mostly T-shirts and jeans, no band T-shits, thank you. BUT, I mostly like to use one piece only clothes, and I like investing on how I look. During the week: suit and tie.

Humor: I can't show this here, cause english ain't my native language, but I'm mostly acid / ironic / metaphoric humored. I like to goof around, but I mostly do jokes that few do understand, and these are the people I'm friends with. Slow people please me not. But I do act jokingly all the time.

Social life: I'm not friendly with everyone. I don't like being a hypocrite (unless I'm trying not to hurt someone who's a good person), if I don't like you, i'll tell ya straigh in your face. I've no racial, religious or color prejudice. With my male friends I don't act all "balls scratching, mainly brute", I just follow the mood. With the girls, I tend to be nicer and give advice whenever asked for.

Politics: I don't join many policits discussions, cause I tend to take them to the end. Lawier's characteristics, sorry. I got my own idea about it, but I listen and speak when asked.

Class: for my likings (anime, drawing...) I'd be put in the nerd class (I study a lot too), but I'd classify myself as mainstream / clown of the crowd, not too nerd, not too cool.

Dressing: A mix of Michael Jackson, Preppy, and Hip-Hop (It's better than it sounds). I usually wear sweaters, deep colored jeans, white Air Force Ones. If I wear T-Shirts I like them a little small. I have a bit of a muscular build. This is very close to what I wear in real life.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IM7DayYfKRE

Humor: A lot of sarcasm. I don't really consider myself funny, but a lot of people laugh at my jokes.

Social life: Nothing much. I go to a lot of games. I have a few dates here and there. I can get into a party easy as long as it isn't one to just get wasted.

Politics?: I'm wishing that political parties would stop existing, but I agree way too much with the democrats.
You addition:

Class: Same here. I consider myself a nerdy guy, but I hate talking to nerds who embrace the stereotype. It just feels uncomfortable sometimes. I actually used to own a clique of nerdy guys, and a lot of people would come to me to talk about that clique (hooking up people, inviting groups over, etc.)

Reading this I sound like a snob.  :(

Dressing: Bit of jeans and a Brown hoodie with hooks in the sleeves where my thumbs go in. Kinda funky. Oh, and I also grow a goatee. :]]

Humor: Memes, spurs of the moment, and perhaps other strange sayings that probably aren't quite fitting for the situation. People do say I have a good humor.

Social life: Though I don't have a ton of close friends, I'm generally well liked by everyone. Though I'm not prone to joining smaller gatherings, I do take part in very major ones.

Politics: I'm part of the 'wage war and drink beer' party, even though I'm not old enough to drink beer and hate how it tastes.

You Addition: Me + 2 = 85.6 mol. Enough said.

Class: Nerd/part of the performing arts team. I'm somewhere inbetween the two, and yes, there is an apparent one that exists. As for the extremes, there are some flat-out nerds that look up to me, but I don't really care for them either way, and at the same time, there are big-time drama/singing junkies that I really want to like, but simply don't share the same interests as I do.

Dressing: Plain, hoodies or other sweatshirts as well as single-coloued t-shirt. I've been using jeans lately but I don't enjoy it, just to stiff for my style... I like my jogging pants just the way they are; a bit baggy and enough space.
I prefer not to stick out of crowds and therefore uses mainly darker colours. I barely even wear any accessories or necklaces ect. It's uneccessary. I don't care anyway as long as it's comfortable.

Humor:No, as in. No, I'd be surprised if anyone told me that they think I'm funny unless they are trying ot be funny themselves.

Social life: I do have one, girlfriend and a bunch of friends; although high-school more or less split the bunch. We don't hang out as much as we did earlier and usually just talk over Msn.
I'm the kind of person that people are drawn to if they have no one else to hang around with. I'm kinda like a protection for them as I stick out for everyone around me and I rarely judge anyone(and I usually go soft on them even if I do).
And I speak my mind; never boldly. I always make sure that the person in question won't be offended (although I don't bother that in a heated quarrel).

Politics?: Nope, not interesed although I can see through the scheming and realize our politicians' misstakes beforehand.

Class:Nerd I 'spose, I don't read manga/animee, I only watch "Heroes" on the television and I actually just play something when I have free time.
I list girlfriend->fun->homework along my priorities and that's pretty much how I live.
But I doubt that everyone around me is even aware of my girlfriend and simply thinks that I'm spending my hours at home on MS paint(hmm... wait a minute).

I think I covered everything.

Dressing: Black denim jacket on top of a black hoodie, dark green shirt underneath. Usually have the cuffs open, with the hoodie sleeves about half way down my hand, usually up to the thumb. Dark blue semi-fitting jeans held up by a black military belt. Iron cross necklace around neck.
Humor: Sarcastic, although often times I just add the right emotion or emphasis on a statement, however true or serious for my humor.
Social life: So long as you're not a prick I've probably hung out with yeh. Try to get along with everyone, usually do. Have a lot of friends, but only the few that I regularly hang out with.
Politics?: Socialist. Would be communist if I was dumb enough to believe it could work.
Class: Artist/Nerd I suppose.

Uhh, wrongo then. To be a true nerd I'd be like [nerd]Fun > homework > g/f. Why? Cause g/fs usually tend to get mature earlier, and repell your odd tastes, like hentai XD

So no...I'd say you're the quiet regular type of guy.

All of ya are pretty much run-on-the-mill people...Where are our freaks, like military-clothing wearers or long-hair-dark-ironmaiden fans?

I prefer Linkin Park, but still, I do have the hair and I am semi dark.. o.O

Dressing: Pajamas, usually XD
Humor: Alot of sarcasm.  I am funny, but you have to have the right kind of sense of humor to think so.
Social life: I usually keep to myself.  I'm horrible at talking in real life, and I come off as nervous alot.  I don't know why I keep to myself in real life. :\
Politics: I don't honestly care that much.. >.>  I hate America, why should I care about it's government?  That's the cold truth.
Class: Artistic-goth-nerd, something like that.  I come off as depressed/emo because I like to keep to myself and because I'm semi-dark, but I can't classify myself that easily.

Dressing: By day its dress shirts and V-neck Sweaters.
The rest of the time, I let my self be a spectacle. I have Half Inch Gagues in my earlobes...A handlebar moustache and somesideburns to make the rebel army envious. Well maybe not that epic of sideburns, but im trying.
Im a slender dude, and My dressing varies from day to day. Somedays I sport my Nice jeans. Other days get combat pants. I wear my (tattoo print) chuck taylors most of the time, and they match nicely with my 1.5 sleeves of visible tattoos.
My hair is short and fairly conservative in the winter, but in tattoo season, it usually finds its way into a mohawk, or a mass shag.
I dont wear many band shirts, unles theyre epic as hell. I own a Mastodon Shirt, and a Ramones Shirt. Most of my other shirts are threadless.

Humor: Pretty brash and crude when Im in a comfortable element. Im quick to throw racial humour out there, and especially like to do so when unfamiliar whiteys are around. It makes them the most uncomfortable. However, I most appreciate dry, subtle humor. See: arrested development.

Social life: I have hundreds of "friends" mostly just from tattooing. Just about everyone tries to befirend you when you have a service like that to offer. But I have 3 or 4 Really close friends, whom are like family, and have been for years. And My fiance is pretty much a chunkier, azn version of myself, with a slightly more crude sense of humour.

Politics?: By default, Im a pretty conservative guy. Mostly because its the only system that works right now, in my locale...but if i were given the authority to tear it all down and start my own system, Id be supporting a  two tiered system of Communist rural and urban capital.

Class: I dunno how cyberpunk classes work. In D&D I would be a very inconsitent lawfull evil alignment. I guess Im an um.... artist? Halp here plz. Im a toned down metalhead.

(as a teenager i was the makeup wearing goth. See goths circa 1996)

Dressing: Leather jacket, brown shoes, superfringe that's cut so it doesn't look emo and can look epic if headbanging; jeans, band t-shirt under slightly old fashioned zip v-jumper things. I wear a guitar slide on my finger a lot of the time.

Humour: Very rarely use sarcasm, I'm sick of it. I'm past the weird spectacle humour (I used to do things like crawl across a desk using only my chin to pull myself along and see how far I could get before my friends stopped talking and noticed XD That stuff was a bit of attention seeking but it was well recieved in that group of friends)

My humour generally depends on who I'm with. I have massive, complicated in-joke humour with my brothers, though.

Social life: Not fantastic XD There's the band, occasional gigs I go see and trips down the pub with some buddies that are kinda becoming drinking buddies. Doesn't happen very often though. There's a few friends that are constantly round my house, for some reason.

Politics: My political views are so extreme that I've decided never to go into politics because It could hurt too many people. I basically think that personal freedom should be preserved at all costs, even at the sacrifice of people's security and safety.

Class: Lazy musician

Hmm, the cyberpunk classes heh...I never thought of posting them, but it'd be a curious idea...One day I'll meet you guys and we'll play a nice and tense session of cyberpunk...I'll be glad to kill your characters ^_^

Anyway, the RPG liking would put me in the NERD right away, but I've never really got that "lizard's belly tan" because of it. I've always done sports, went to night clubs (not adult fun ones XD) and so on...

Anyway, outta curiosity! I'd say I am a poor and smaller kind of media here...not really fittable for a Solo, unfortunately :(

Each character in the Cyberpunk world is playing one of nine roles:

Rockerboys/girls - If you live to rock, this is where you belong. Rockerboys are the street poets, social conciences and rebels of the 2000's. Special Ability: Charismatic Leadership

Solos - You were re-born with a gun in your hand... the flesh and blood hand, not the metallic weapons factory that covers most of your other arm. You're one of the elite fighting machines of the Cyberpunk world. Special Ability: Combat Sense

Netrunners - With your direct mental link to the computer, you can plunge headfirst into the dizzying datawinds of the Net; the worldwide communications system that joins humanity together. As an electronic wraith, you are the ultimate "hacker". Special Ability: Interface

Techies - You can't leave anything alone, if it sits near you for more than five minutes, you've disassembled it and made it into something new. Your cousin down the street is just like you, but he's a Medtechie. In a world where half of medicine is related to mechanics, it makes sense. Techie Special Ability: Jury Rig, MedTechie Special Ability: Medical Tech

Medias - You've got a videocam and a press pass... and you're not afraid to use them. You're a national figure, seen nightly on a million TV sets worldwide. Special Ability: Credibility

Cops - In the old days, they only used to SHOOT at cops. Now you're lucky if you just take a slug. And there you are... a beat cop or detective in a armored squadcar, patrolling this jungle with the heavy predators. Special Ability: Authority

Corporates - In the old days they would have called you a yuppie... a hard driven, fast-track MBA on his way up the corporate ladder. Sure, it's selling your soul to the Company, but face it; the Corporations rule the Cyberpunk world. Special Ability: Resources

Fixers - You realized fast you weren't ever going to get into a Corporate job, and you didn't think you were tough enough or crazy enough to be a solo. But you knew you had a knack for figuring out what other people wanted and how to get it for them... for a price, of course. Special Ability: Streetdeal

Nomads - Crammed into a huge, ragtag fleet of cars, vans, buses and RV's, your Nomad pack roams the freeways. You look for supplies, odd jobs and spare parts in a world where society has fragmented. Special Ability: Family

Well, I'm sure it could be. But anyone I've ever seen even remotely like that is close enough to Japanese scene to lop 'em in there. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen an honest to god cyberpunk.

Dressing: Generic Blue jeans + Generic Shirt + Overshirt/vest.

Humor: Pitch black and laced with sarcasm and/or cynicism.

Social life: I derive my sustenance by exuding an aura of pure malice. Oddly enough, people like me despite this. If you're a jerk, I hate you. If you don't leave me alone when I don't want to deal with you, I hate you more. Otherwise, I'm pretty much a nice guy.

Politics?: Absolute hatred for corrupt political systems, though I tend to sway towards the Democrats since they don't have their heads as far up their *** as Republicans do.

Class: You know that scary smart guy that sits in the back of rooms and you think he'll blow up at any moment because you can FEEL the pure hatred he's emitting? Yeah. That's me. I suppose if I had to chain myself down to a "predefined" role, you could call me a nerd. (Remember kids, nerds get stuff done; Geeks only talk about it)

Chaotic Neutral, **** yeah.
