I like your chipset,I'd use it. And I like how there are no black outlines.

The reason for the picture is to show that, if you had balck outlines that screenshot  would look horrible, but it look amazing now all smooth and such.

I'm not sure if i got any suggestions, i'll think of some

Well, I was thinking of the old fashion Frankenstein-type lab with the huge switches, tesla coils, random electron equipment that serves no obvious purpose.

And like random bubbling chemicals. That's pretty much the steampunk lab. Electronic gear and sophisticated science in steampunk were reduced to weird gadgets that when we look at them today were utterly useless.

as its you i can make some of the chipset if you like me to ?

http://michaelmay.us/08blog/0508a_franklab.jpg  this is going to be ok to make

made so far

if you look at the last lot there a 3 or 4 that make most of the lab

I'm working on it as well, but you can add that to the chain game if you'd like. It'd be nice if people had some options.

Okay, so I made an animated gyroscope and some Frankensteinish machines, but I figure it's important to get the outdoor chip completed before I do anything else, so I'm doing so now.

I figured out an easy way to add rust and such in Photoshop, and I think it looks pretty nice on metallic brass/copper things. An early complaint about the inner chip I got was that everything looks "too clean" (I think Fish said this). Would it be an improvement if I went back and roughed some stuff up after the outdoor chip is complete?

How about you make two sets, one roughed up, and the other pristine.
I think we might want to be open to choices, since some areas will be older, and have more rust, while others, like in newer cities, will be cleaner and stuff like that.

I'm liking the direction you're taking with these chips, Val. The animated pieces are excellent and the soft coloring style works well in conjunction with the Theodore chipsets. In terms of fittingness, it's fine enough; better than the interiors offered in the Theo set, thanks to the little details you include, such as copper muskets, airship models, and brass pipes. Very nice work.

Thanks, hope you enjoy this next chip.

Okay, I think I'm going to post screenshots gradually, just a few at a time, so people can point out specific problems instead of being overwhelmed by screenshots from a lot of different areas. I have a lot more done than what you see here, but I'm having some problems that I'll get to in a sec.

First up: the "treehouse" city.

I thought it would be a great idea if it were possible to build an entire town on these structures. Very steampunk, I say. The smoke coming out of the chimney is animated (Nine freakin' events, fortunately I made a handy picture that shows how to make it fairly easily). The little wheels are also animated. Thinking of adding some pulleys and maybe some random chains hanging down to give it some character.

I'm having problems with the stuff on the ground. Seems like there'll be a lot of empty space...I have gothic fences and barrier walls, but I don't know what else to add. Will anybody be terribly offended if I add a tree or two? Is it possible for a city to include a couple trees and still be steampunk? If not, how bout some shrubbery? I think I'll add a bench and an equestrian statue, but I need ideas!!

You can have gardens with trees in them, I think that'd be good.

Anyways...I'm not really feeling with these as much as I was with the interior, mostly do to the empty space.
For some ideas for space fillers:
Lamposts, possibly electric (the Edison light bulb was invented in 1880, well into the Victorian era)
Random gear...thingies
Steam Turbines

I'm out of ideas

This one seems alright enough... The only slight qualm I've got with it is that the walls don't fit together quite correctly. In the 1st shot, you can see how the roof sort of bends, right? Well, the walls under that don't really match up to this bending motion in the roof. Though, that mainly seems to be an issue with how it was mapped, rather than the actual chip.

Aside from that, I'd say to make the wall design of the houses more complex. Perhaps add some wooden base panels at the bottom of the wall. If anything, that would be what I'd do.

Yeah, that's kind of a mapping error. I had made several houses before this one and wanted to try something new. Probably not something I'll try again!

And yeah, the houses are definitely plain. The wooden base thing sounds good....Is there a way you can locate a photo of a house with something like that so I can try to emulate it?

I've got lamp posts. Steam turbines sounds like a great suggestion though...I'll get on that.

:D The panorama is from a photograph actually, though I have the photoshop tools to make a realistic-looking sky panorama, would just take a little time. I love realistic sky panoramas.

Trash, Maybe some grease stains, moss or mold
Spare parts, maybe a slightly more worn-looking ground tile where people and their foot-traffic would be the heaviest
Trash cans, Ornate Mailboxes and lamposts.
Graffitti, posters, discarded leaflets

Just to throw some ideas at you

Im liking how its progressing Val. Good work and stuff

Trash cans. Why didn't I think of that?

Was already gonna do some posters, maybe some monochromatic ones along with some Art Nouveau. Graffiti I'm a little iffy about....I think it would look a mite anachronistic if done improperly. The time period is supposed to be roughly the days of Jack the Ripper, albeit in an alternate universe.
