Steampunk Town (new and improved, with more screenshots!)
« on: April 26, 2009, 04:25:41 AM »
This is the work-in-progress steampunk chipset I'm making for the upcoming chain game. I'm actually making two chipsets; an outdoor and indoor one, and this is the latter. I'm not posting the actual chipset, because I'd rather it be exclusive to the chain game for now.

The shadow is screwy, but it's just there as a demonstration. The clock was originally going to have customizable hands, but I screwed up and placed the face dead-center and am having trouble getting overlapping charsets to align properly. For now, the hands are static.

Still working on the elevator, so you'll have to take the stairs for now. This area is based on the Bradbury Building, a real-life steampunk palace.

Going to create some rugs to avoid too much dead space. I'm also going to create some objects to place in the shelf to the far right.

This is some sort of workshop. Yeah, I know, where are all the steampunk gadgets? I've been working almost exclusively on the chip itself, and I've only done a few animated things today. A lot more gadgets are coming, rest assured. The boiler to the left has two animations; the needle on the dial jumps, and steam spews out of the faucet. The fan to the upper right is great animated. Also, the piping on the walls is fully customizable.

The kitchen....not much to see here. Planning on adding all sorts of steampunk kitchen gadgets, but for now you'll have to settle for a copper kettle and a spice rack.

It occurred to me how much work I have to do to even get the bare minimum of a chipset..... o_o ....next update will see this thing spiced up immensely. I'd love to hear some suggestions, especially about what kind of walls and floors to add and modify, as those are my weak spots. And I don't really know what floors qualify as "steampunk."

As promised, here are the new and improved chip's screenshots. I also included a couple animated gifs.

This is supposed to be an apothecary, very applicable in this setting. The shelves are supposed to have glass backing, so they look a bit better on lighter backgrounds, but they're fine here too. The items on the shelves, like the books in the bookcase are fully customizable, and here I stuffed them with items of Victorian medicine. There's also a phrenology model head on the desk there. I imagine there can be vendors with the medicine cart on the left around town to sell you potions and such on the go.

Wanted to show off the fixed bed. I'll make it so you can change the colors of the sheets if purple's not your thing (the curtains too). The chest there opens.

Wanted to show off the mirror.....which is too high for me to reach. :(

The Weapons Shop. As you can see, there's some steampunk-style guns mounted on the wall. I may redo the crates, since they stand out a bit much, but I think it's cool that you can stack them like I did. The copper tank is highly customizable, but I'll get to that later.

Here's the fan animated...sorry for the crappy quality. It's a blown-up gif and looks pretty blurry:

I made nine paintings for this chip. I can make more if anyone working on the game requests.

I think the map on the wall looks pretty damn good. The table is actually based a real one in the White House called the Treaty Table. Also note the model airship in the center of it.

Mr. Clock wonders why you guys don't love it.

The workshop revisited. You can add hatches to either side of the copper tank (You can also elongate the tank itself, but I forgot to do that in this chip.) They can then be opened to either be empty or to show a flame and some sparks, I guess for smelting or cooking purposes. You can add a pipe to the top of the tank, too. The dials at the bottom right are animated...I placed them a little too high, but you get the idea.

The boiler again. I made a bunch of animated gears spinning, but I don't really know where to put them. They'd probably look fine on pipes or walls, or you could put them in the black margin like I did here.

The boiler animated:

I made a few doors, all fully animated. I plan to make many more, but I'll do that when I'm mostly through the outdoor chip.

The fireplace, unlit.

The fireplace, animated:

That's all for now, I think I screenshotted most of what I've done.

Very nice work, but a little rough around the edges. At some points the colours don't blend well... like the telescope stand vs. the carpet and the character's light outline vs. the white tiling. It equally has some beautiful touches. I love the stylised window panes. And I have to commend your efficiency.

Brass globe is smexy.

Indeed, it is quite beautifully done overall despite a few rough edges. I think it shows genuine creativity.

And floor quality, to my understanding, is just anything old fashion. I think places had actual stone tile at around this time too. Overall I think it looks right for the intended atmosphere.

Naw, actually IMO the tiled floors look alright. I like it overall. In the workshop by the way, is that... a small brass bladed fan? o_o

Tiled floors are awesome, nicely shaded and that.

Red carpet looks a bit like offal, though.

I like the attention to small gadgets like the old water heater with the pressure gauge and the small brass fan, and then the big clock too.

It is!

My boyfriend keeps telling me the carpet is perfect for the atmosphere, but I definitely see the problem with the telescope. I dunno. I'll look around for carpet alternatives that aren't so loud or...entrail-like.

I might use the carpet as a rug and go for some other flooring. Wish I could do hardwood floors, but wood is nigh-impossible to make as a chipset tile, and I'm running out of lower-level non-tile room.

Looks great the circles in the windows are a little rough, but very creative to have come from scratch.

Amazing work. I bow down to greatness.

But some things need darker outlines since they blend into the floor and is hard to see.

Edit: Also noted something else

You can see the top of the chest of drawers but not on the shelf next to it.
